9 week old but was premature, waking 3 hourly
« on: October 17, 2007, 07:53:57 am »
I have a 9 week old who was 6 weeks premature.  He is now 9lb 6oz so is a decent weight.  He is waking every 3 hours during the night and though up till now I have been feeding him to get his weight up I now think its time he slept a little bit longer through the night.  He is eating anywhere from 30oz to 38oz a day (just had another growth spurt) plus I am also breastfeeding him though this is for maybe only 1 to 1 1/2 hours total a day. There is no way he is not getting enough food through the day and we have tried cluster feeding him as well with the dream feed.

For example yesterday
E 3am
E 6.45am
E 10AM    A 1HR      S 1HR     Y SHOPPING
E 1PM      A 2HRS   S 2HRS    Y COLLEGE HOMEWORK
E 5PM      A CRIED AND WOULD NOT SETTLE WHEREVER I PUT HIM      S WOULD NOT GO TO SLEEP    Y PREPARED TEA
E 7PM      A 15MINS(BATH)    S 1/2HR     Y BATH
E 8.30PM THEN PUT HIM BACK TO BED
E 11PM  THEN WOKE UP AGAIN AT 2.50AM

Some advice on how we get him through the night would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Molly, He won't sleep through the night - he is only 3 weeks old. It's perfectly normal for him to be feeding 3 hourly through the night. He's just not ready to go any longer I'm afraid.

Firstly congratulations.  It sounds as if everything is going really well.

Agree with Wendy.  If he's only 3 weeks (age corrected) or actually - 9 weeks for normal babies, waking every 3 hours during the night is doing well.  He's not ready to go longer - his tummy is still very tiny and needs feeding during the night. 2 night feeds is normal for this age.

Try and rest when he does.  Forget about the housework etc.... I'm off for a rest now and DS is 5 months and wakes around 3am and up for the day about 6.30.

I agree with the others he is only really 3 weeks old & even though I had 2 big babies (9 & 10lb) each they still fed about 3 hourly at night at 3 weeks old... the weight has very little to do with the size of their tummies (his about the size of the palm of his hand) & it isn't true bigger babies always sleep longer as they have more body to fill up.
