any success shifting a toddlers day forward?
« on: October 17, 2007, 18:59:07 pm »
how did you do it?

our current routine:
wake 6:15/6:30
nap 11:45/12 for 1.5-2hrs
bed at 7pm if he slept two hours, earlier if the nap was shorter.
asleep by 7:30 at the latest.

when he was younger his nap was always at 12 regardless of wake-up, this is no longer working.
seems like if I have him down 5.25hrs after waking, he'll nap longer (closer to 2hrs)
but like today that meant
nap at 11:30....

so whats better?
delay nap by 1hr----he'll be exhausted and hopefully sleep well, delaying it by 15min here or there leads to a shorter nap.
or do I delay bedtime? if he has had a good nap?

I was going to try for gradual but because things vary day to day by 30min or so, seems as though we are going back and forth rather then forward.

Thanks

hey deb
Sophie now wakes at 7am each day rather than 6 as before- a nasty bout of flu has done the trick for us! For 2 weeks she has been napping for 1hr 30 and sleeping 12- 12.5hrs at night! The flu sucks but boy am I grateful for that longer night sleep! Although she is getting better now and I think it won't last.. (also I am not recommending this as a solution for you, you understand!  ;))
hope you get sorted, keeping fingers crossed xxxx

I hope it is nothing serious Deb!

I'm not sure if this would work as I think you said there was NO way you could get Noah to take 2 naps, but...if he had a very short catnap at 11:00/11:30, could you get him to take another nap later in the day, delaying bedtime a bit?  If you did this a few days in a row maybe he'd start to sleep a bit later in the morning.

Not sure whether it will work or not, but this is my plan for when we change the clocks.

oh Natasha, I tried that in the spring when the clocks moved forward but it never lasted and now they are moving back! soon our 6:30wake will bedcome 5:30----which is why I need to shift!
Sari, we have had a rough 4 or 5days. not enough sleep overall. thats the only reason we are in trouble!

we had an awful night wed night, and he was awake from 2:30-5am, and then slept til 7:30----but having fallen asleep 7:30 the night before---that was less then 10hrs.
then yesterdays nap, I offeed at noon--hopeing he would sleep 2hrs, but I'm not sure what happened, quiet and then started crying at 12:30--wi/wo til 12:45---and he slept til 2:15.
I thought early to bed---so he was asleep by 6:45---and woke at 5:30 today!

- have already had one meltdown this morning at the breakfast table, with a full on tantrum----this has started the last few days---I think not enough sleep.

I'm not sure if the catnap thing will work, I'll find out today!
