Why are bottles suddenly clogging up with formula?
« on: October 22, 2007, 17:26:17 pm »
Have been using the same formula for over a month now and am using Dr Browns with a no. 3 teat cos the s26 ar is a tiny bit thicker. Today every bottle I gave him except the first one clogged up. Am making the bottles in the same way and even returned to using the Avent bottles with a no.3 which were a tiny bit better but clogged up too. Any ideas? I am having a hard enough time getting him to get the bottles in his mouth without having to worry why he is sucking and nothing is going down. It also makes a mockery of sterilising if I am squishing the teat in an attempt to unblock it , though that is the least of my worries  :)

I found that when I was using formula (avent bottles and teats and Cow&Gate Comfort) they would clog up when I was shaking them up.  I would just squeeze and faff about with the teat until the excesspowder dropped back into the bottle again.  I think I might have maybe put too much formula into too quickly so it all setlled as a clump on the surface, iykwim?

I was going to say is it shaken enough? Is the milk thickened as i know your lo has reflux? If so maybe use a dr browns Y cut teat, much easier for lo's to get the milk out

Yes I shake it vigoursly then let it settle and it's been fine like this up until yesterday. It's a bit thicker than normal formula but not much. I opened a new can of formula this am and it's the same. Unfortunately cant get any Dr Browns stuff here so might go get the Avent number 4 today and see how it is.

Hi there, yes if it is thickened it will def clog up the teats, good idea to go for the number 4 teat.

Good luck  :-*

We are on an AR formula and the directions say to roll the bottle upright between your palms before you shake it. Have you tried this? The rolling makes the powder sink into the water so you don't shake it up into the teat - works most of the time! What temp do you need to make the bottles at? Ours has to be put into cold water so it thickens in the tummy not the bottle.

Laura I make them at room temperature so that's basically cold. What I dont understand is that I have been using this formula for over a month and this is only happening now. Will try the rolling :-)

Ok we finally solved the mystery last night, took us long enough  ::)
Last time dh went to buy formula there was none in our local supermarket so he went to the same one in a different place and got it. Obvioulsy they havent been storing it properly. Dh just figured it out last night and went to get some new stuff in our local supermarket and it's fine, and ds is already eating better. And of course now the number 4 Avent is too fast so changed all back to number 3 today.
So 4 more cans of baby formula to throw away. And well done to dh  :)

Wow! That's really poor - I would call the company and the shop, that's a lot to throw away and there must be health and safety issues. Glad you got it figured though!
