Poo!!
« on: October 29, 2007, 07:40:24 am »
Sorry this is probably TMI, especially first thing in the morning, also not sure whether this belongs here but figured I'd start here as bf and poo are sooo closely related  ;D

So between about 2-4months my daughter was doing probably 2 poos a day and no pooing at night. Then a couple of weeks ago (now nearly 5 months old) she started doing a poo at night, and I'm talking carnage here   :o - often a complete outfit change at 2am or whatever time it was. That's my first question - which meal of mine would be hitting her system in the night - I eat a huge bowl of fruit and yoghurt in the morning, could that be it or would that have cleared her system by then?

Now, and sorry this isn't the end of the yucky stuff, she has started pooing all the time, the night before last and yesterday she pooed at 12.30am, 3am, 4am, 7am, 10am, 3pm, 6pm, last night 1.30am and 4am!! It's been like this for almost a week now. They are all very yellow but some are watery enough that most soaks into the nappy and some are a bit translucent, maybe like yellow jelly that's just begun to set. Could she have a stomach upset? - she is behaving perfectly normally and doesn't seem to be in any pain or not well at all. Any ideas what could be causing my life, and particularly my nights, to become such an endless line of pooey nappies???

Thanks for any advice or shared poo experiences  ;D

;D...I'm sorry, you're post cracked me up.  I don't have any ideas about what might be causing it but my lo poos A LOT still too.  Usually twice in the middle of the night at least sometimes more.  I did move him up a diaper size at night to prevent the leaks and need of outfit change in the middle of the night.  Seems to be working.

Nobody every tells you how much you will be thinking, talking, wondering about poo when you have a baby.

Poo obsession is an interesting part of motherhood that's for sure.

It's fascinating what a massive range of normal there is: one poo every couple of weeks, 12 poos a day, mustard coloured and a ton of other shades as well, pure liquid and not liquid. The list goes on. And it can change all the time.
But a sudden increase - like from 2 poos to many many more might be worth a moment of reflection - although it still doesn't have to mean a problem.

I'm afraid you won't be able to precisely say that a meal you've had at a particular time will produce results at a particular time. There are too many intermediate stages - your digestion, your milk production, her feeding, her digestion. Pooing isn't that 'direct' if that makes sense.
Her pattern will adjust with time. It might help to do some baby massage after a bath - clockwise circles on her tummy - but if something isn't going to come until a particular time it's best to let nature take its course.
Poo that is curdy isn't a problem but as you've noticed a sudden change it might be worth reflecting on any changes that might have been going on. Is your addition of the big breakfast a new thing? Are you eating extra dairy? Taking any new supplements? Has she been through a growth spurt recently and upped her intake?

I don't think you have anything to worry about but you may want to keep a food diary for yourself and just see if you can notice any patterns. But if she is reacting to something it's unlikely to be a food intolerance problem as you'd see other symptoms - discomfort/ additional gas/ stools that might contain blood flecks or seem very frothy and mucousy.
