What do you think of this routine?
« on: October 29, 2007, 16:59:28 pm »
My DH was talking to my MIL about our almost 6 month old frequent NW and bad naps. She had 11 children and this was her suggestion for helping with his sleeping.
Wake at 7:30am(he already wakes at 7am)
nap at around 10 am
another nap at around 2 pm
bed at around 8:30pm.

This is so far off what I was doing that now I am so confused. I trust her because she did raise so many children, but at the same time, aren't the awake times to long for a baby who is 6 months?

This is a good routine for a 8 or 9 mo old. Bedtime a bit earlier I'd say...

For her age maybe a 7-7 rhytm, two longer naps and a cat nap are more appropriate unless she handles longer A-times no problem...

A 2.5hr A time was about what dd did at that age.  I agree with Steffi that the bedtime is probably too late.  Around 6mo is when dd started refusing her catnap, so that was a hit or miss at times, but we'd try for it, and if she refused we'd do a bit earlier bedtime - so if bedtime was usually 7, we did it more like around 6.  HTH!

Yeah, what vadensmummy said. Either two long naps plus catnap or two long ones and really early bed time...

Good luck :)

Theoretically, what your MIL is saying is not incorrect.  However, sleep experts today indicate that 11-12 hour stretches at night for LOs is more restorative.  Her kids likely took longer naps during the day to counter balance the slightly less sleep at night.  It's not bad.  But not uber ideal for the best restorative sleep.  Especially if any of the naps get curtailed in any way.
It was probably the best way for her to manage as many kids as she did to get them on the same sleep pattern.

As pp said, it may be a bit long for A times, but it really depends on your LO.

If you'd like, can you post your entire routine, and maybe we can find areas to help you tweak?
