A time at 12 months
« on: October 31, 2007, 19:22:12 pm »
My kiddos are changing sleep patterns again. About how much A time should they get nowadays between naps and bedtime? Before my lo's, twins, were taking a 30 min nap in the am (I woke up DD because DS was waking at 30 min) and then a 1:10-1.5 hr nap in tha pm. Bedtime was 4 hrs or so later. But I've been tryong to tweak their schedule without guidelines and am getting frustrated.

Last few days they want to sleep longer in the am. Not sure how to procede.

We need a clean slate. Right now everything is all over the place. They sleep from 10-11 hrs at night, depending on who knows what If they sleep less than 11, I change their pants and put them back to bed. I separate them at this time (they sleep in the same room), putting ds in the packnplay in our room, and dd back in her crib. Ds sleeps his naps in the packnplay. Most times they will sleep more, but after fussing for more than 30 min. Then I continue with our routine, but then one will fall asleep late for naps, and the afternoon is off. Before everything started changing, they were both sleeping about 2 1/2 hrs of naps combined, and 11 hours at night.

Anyway our schedule for the last few weeks has been as follows:
6:30 wake
10:30 nap 30 min (dd wants to sleep long here)
1:30 nap 1:10-1:30 (I recently moved this up from 2, because ds was waking 30 min into nap, crying hard; dd hasn't slept well since we moved it up- used to sleep 1:45)
7:30 asleep

The kids are 13 months old (about 11 1/2 adjusted)

I know at around that age Sasha was doing 3.5 hr awake time between naps but her AM nap was longer (1hr).
Strangely enough when she was around 13 mths she started waking later in the AM so was just having a 30 min am nap but clearly needed more.Thats when we transitioned to 1 nap.

How did you do that? I'm not sure whether to push the nap later, or keep it earlier? How do you balance getting them to sleep longer with preventing them from being overtired?

Last night the kiddos slept from about 8pm to 7:30 am this morning. How did that happen? Their mrongin nap was the longer one yesterday. Today they fell asleep at 10:45. We'll see how long they go. Are they telling me that they have been overstimulated all this time- that's why ds was waking only after 30 min in the am?

I originally started putting them down later for am naps in order to get them to wake up later the next morning, because of early wakings. Maybe I went too far?

Anyway, I'm very confused now. This morning they went to sleep at 3.25hr after waking. Does this sound right? And if they sleep more than 45 min, is the 3.5hrs you suf=ggested the way to go?

I guess I would like to know this- If they wake up anywhere between 6:30 and 7:30 in the morning, do I keep the nap time consistent, or the A time?

I always kept the awake time consistent once sashas night sleep was ok,still do in fact ;).
Generally if they sleep no longer than 45 mins then that is a sign they need more awake time to get a decent length nap.If they sleep longer then you know you've got the awake time about right.
Awake times can vary at this age but i always found sasha was better with 3.5 hrs awake time.

But that's the crazy thing. Any longer wake time and he only sleeps 30 min. Two days in a row ds went down for a nap 2.5 hrs after a 30 min am catnap. He slept 1:10. The next day he reversed the time for the naps, taking a 1:10 in the am, and 3.5hrs later a 35 min catnap. Then yesterday the 45 min pm n ap, after 2.5hrs wake time from a 30 min am nap. AHHHHH!

Sashas mummy- The kiddos woke at 6:15 today, so I put them down by 9:15 instead of 10:30, which is their scheduled time. They were showing tired cues, anyway. Not sure how long they'll sleep. We've been trying to adjust slowly for the time change this coming Sunday. So I don't know what to do- put them to bed fifteen mintues later, like we have been about every 10 days, or put them down earlier. I'm afraid we'll be up at 5 if we keep this up.

sorry for the late reply as i've only just got back from work.
i'd have done an earlier bedtime if the naps had been short.
from what i can remember about DDs routine at that  age was
awake-6.30
nap-9.30-10.30am
nap-2pm-3.30pm
bedtime 7-7.15pm
The thing with sasha is i had to wake her up from naps otherwise her AM nap would have gone on for 2hrs!!!

Ds's day:
6:15 wake
9:30 30 min nap
1:50 40 min nap
in car on errands- nap from 5:30-6:00
bed at 7:45, asleep by 8pm

What a wacky day! I woke DD 30 min into am nap, because ds woke up, then she took a 1:20 nap in the pm, AND fell asleep in the car until we got home 20 minutes later. She fell asleep tonight at about 8:10.

Oh please, oh please I hope they sleep until 7 at least, oh please, oh please

No such luck. Ds woke coughing at 5:50, and woke up dd. They both were able to go back to sleep for about 10 min within the next hour, when I finally got them up at 6:45. Oh, well. That;s what you get with twins, I guess.

We decided to go ahead and start transitioning to one nap. I put them down for their am nap at 11:15. Ds slept one hour, dd two hours. So I planned to put ds down for a catnap at 3:45 (3.5 hrs after the am nap- he fell asleep by 4). Well the darndest thing happened... it is 4:45 and he is still sleeping! This is the first time in almost two months he hasn't had a 30 min nap somewher in the day. What's the deal? Anyway, I am still going to go ahead with the transition, seeing that dd was able to sleep two full hours (she's done this before this month, if I let her). Also, it was difficult to keep her awake all that time this morning (she almost fell asleep in the stroller about 20 min before she went down for a nap), but she didn't fuss or cry. She is awake now, and has shown no signs of being sleepy yet this afternoon. Ds was happy all this morning.

My only question now is should I cut his afternoon nap (if he does this again) so he eventually sleeps longer earlier, and therefore will be able to get to sleep at a decent hour? I'm concerned that he is going to keep dd up tonight, singing...

I'd probably limit the PM nap to no more than 20-30 mins.
or if he refuses to take a catnap are you able to put him to bed earlier so that he is asleep by the time DD goes to bed ???
