12 month old not showing tired sign ?
« on: October 31, 2007, 20:31:46 pm »
i have noticed, well i guess since day one that my ds doesn't show tired signs very well. Well now it is even harder to tell. He gets purple inder the eyes close to nap time but no yawns, rubbing eyes, etc. HOw should i tell if he is redy to stretch his awake time and start creaping to 1 nap a day. Today i put him down 3.5 hrs after his last nap and he had purple under eyes, but that was it. He talk and talked for quite a while. fell asleep close to the 4 hr mark. what would you do in this situation?

Same situation here--no tired signs before the nap, but if I miss it--whoa, OT fast. I'm doing trial and error and making up for mistakes with early bedtimes.

Just a Q, does he get more hyper or more quiet, these would be signs.... I notice my DS gets hyoper and whiny when tired, and DD goes quiet

Also does he lay on the floor or anything, which again DD does when tired

My DS just plays happily. Eventually, he gets whiny and will lie on the floor, but I think I've missed the window by then.

hmmmm outta ideas then lol, best thing is to clock watch ie: write down each day when you think you have missed the sleep window and go for little while before that ie: say 25 mins, enough time for a wind down etc.....

I stopped reading cues a looong time ago and went by the clock with my girls & especially when we went through the 2-1 switch.... cues didn't mean anything to me. What I did was set a nap time in the morning & for us that was 9.30am & if she was NOT asleep by say 10am then I would pick her up & aim for 1 nap around 11ish am. Not sure if thats the best thing to do or not but otherwise I found that I would be "trying" for a nap all day long as she seemed tired some days ALL day. So with me it was 9:30am for morning nap & afternoon nap about 3-3.5hrs after the morning nap ended. If she wanted to play around at the 3.5hr mark then I would let her be until she would fall asleep.

If the morning nap was too long (on the days I let her sleep all she wanted in the morning rather than waking her up) she would take a while as well falling asleep for the afternoon nap. Its ok that he fell asleep at the 4hr mark.... as long as the nap is not too late into the afternoon that it pushed bedtime too late (so with us anything later than 4pm & I would wake her up)

ya, i won't let him sleep later then 4:30 but like today as it' halloween.  We went to some family houses adn it was a late night.  He only had a 45 min nap this pm and was up at 4:15, we were on our way home at 9pm and then 2 mins into the car he was out but no sign before it?  He was in a good mood, and happy.  Sometimes i do know that he is getting tired as he will get whinet or start playing on the floor with toys, etc but it's not a daily thing, only sometimes?  So by the time we got home it was 9:30 ( way past his bedtime!) and he was a little disturbed as we had to take off his costume, etc but went right back to slep after, now i just hope there is no night wakes beacuse it was so late?????  I just wish he had clues daily so it would make my life and decision making easier!  I never know if he is ready for longer A time or not.
When he does take so long in the pm to fall asleep i feel bed that it's only 30 min sometimes and then i have to wake him, cause when he is woken he is very cranky and sometimes stays cranky till he goes to bed.

Well its hard when your out & he was probably overtired by bedtime in which case a hormone similar to adrenaline kicks in & he is all happy whereas he is really tired. Not much you can do though.... if you have to go out, you have to go out. He might be cranky the next day but just try for an earlier bedtime & one late night shouldn't really affect his all that much :)

If you don't want to wake him from the afternoon nap because it ends up being so late maybe try shortening the morning nap instead & then let him have a nice long 1.5-2hr nap in the pm instead. Our days were VERY unpredictable with the 2-1 swtich as well & even now that she is on nap nap I dont really have a consistent 2hr nap yet. Sometimes its a short nap & sometimes its 2.5hrs long, lol. I think you just have to go with the flow here but maybe rather than messing about with waking from naps, etc.... you could try just 1 nap around 11.30am & see if he will take a long one for you. Some just go straight to it rather than holding on to 2 naps for a couple of months

He might also be cranky from other things like teething??? :-\

Does he show the tired signs when it's a bit darker in the room? That's what Scotty does. As if he doesn't know he is tired until wind down has started and he is in his bedroom with the light off

I know exactly what you mean! It was like Leorah turned one and never yawned or rubbed her eyes anymore! However if I really pay attention I can see there is a lull in her behaviour and if I miss it she then revs up with renewed energy. It is much easier to spot when we are out and about at playgroup or visiting someone, at home it is impossible and I go by time. We have a mixture of one nap and two naps days, it seems we have a run of one naps and then she will be very tired for a day and take 2 which means she goes to bed later at around 7pm (one nap days and bed is 5.30/6pm). It is a difficult time isn't it  :P

Steffi, that's what ds does too! He's happy and alert and then as soon as we walk into his room and he sees his crib, he's rubbing his eyes...I just have to watch the clock and hope I'm getting him there in time.
