2nd letdown question
« on: November 22, 2007, 14:57:48 pm »
hi, i have a question regarding a sleepy baby.

my 5wo is a very efficient eater taking 10mins at the breast.  weight gain is fine (9oz in a week), and plenty of wet nappies, so i am not concerned about the time it takes to feed him.

on very sleepy days, when he only is latched on for 5 mins and my milk has letdown...  i wake him by changing a nappy, and put him back to the same breast 5-10mins later.  my milk will letdown again.  my question is - does he still get the hindmilk if there is any left from his first attempt?  or, does the fresh letdown just engorge my breast with foremilk?

thanks for any help.

Hi

I hope someone corrects me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember reading that the 2nd let down is richer in hind milk, so its great that your baby stimulates a second let down.

Same side 5-10 minutes later - he's a getting a new letdown rich in fattier hindmilk (though it's a transition and not 2 distinct kinds of milk). Those fat cells are moving down from the alveoli towards the milk ducts with the new letdown.
It's all good.

Do you mean you are no longer feeling it or it really isn't happening at all?

No longer feeling it - very normal as I'm sure you know. It can change at anytime and doesn't mean anything if it does.

No longer 'getting' a letdown (which I'm guessing you mean) can be related to a supply issue (as I think it is in your case from your other post),  or might happen if a mother is suffering from anxiety, is dehydrated or unwell or taking certain medications. Doesn't mean it's permanent though.

Tomorrow will be better. Antibiotics will have had longer to work. Drink plenty when you wake up. Have daddy look after kids for the time it takes you to have a bath and pump in or just out of the bath. It WILL happen.
