my son is a terrific eater as long as i feed him or he has finger foods. he shows no interest in using a spoon. am i stepping into muddy waters here? will he just eventually want to be independent? i just don't want him to expect to be fed come 2yrs!

i think i would continue to offer a mixutre of finger foods and foods that require a spoon - and put the spoon by his plate. will he eat the spoon food with his fingers? may only be a matter of time until he doesn't like his fingers being dirty or peer pressure sets in.

William is very similar.. he is 2 years and 4 months old and still resists using a spoon unless he is eating breakfast cereal or yoghurt. The only difference from your LO is that he hates being spoon fed and won't let us feed him at all..
For most of his meals he prefers finger food - so he ends up not having meals with gravy or sauces at all. But he still has a balanced diet and since he can use the spoon for his cereal and yoghurt I am just waiting on the day he will use it for other meals too lol...
Don't worry about it - your LO will get there! They are fickle little wotsits and soon change their minds xxx

That's right, there are many of us who would like our LOs to be good eaters
Can you offer him a spoon to play with/practice with whilst you spoon feed him in order to prompt some interest ?

My dd is 21 months and she will eat using her spoon half way through her dinner then use her fingers but I have to say Im not really bothered how she eats as long as she eats.

My lo doesn't really use a spoon. She'll let us feed her with a spoon, but would much rather play with it and fling food everywhere with it.
However she does like using a fork but I have to usually stab the food for her or guide her hand. I would just put a spoon and or fork on his tray every meal and just see what happens. I am sure that eventually one day interest in a spoon will just naturally happen. Maybe use a spoon at the same time to show how much fun it can be.
