Help!
« on: December 03, 2007, 16:30:36 pm »
Hi everyone.  New to this site and am very confused about how to transition my LO to a 3.5 EASY.

He is 11 weeks old.

I am breastfeeding and everything went really well until a couple weeks ago.  He started eating only seven minutes on one side, and then he didn't want to eat anymore.  He would cry if I tried to put him back on.  We'd give him a bottle and it was a struggle to get him to eat from that as well.

Then I went out of town this weekend and my husband gave all bottles and he was doing fine.  He also started having him only take 45 naps (which he was doing anyway).  He would have one nap a day which would last about two hours.  Before this weekend, he was on a 3 hr EASY and would have 7 feedings a day.  (By the way, he is also sleeping through the night).

I was reading a different thread that was saying if they aren't eating as much and sleeping for only 45 minutes it may mean they need to switch to a 3.5 hr routine.  I don't think that would be a problem, but I am having a really hard time keeping straight what his new schedule would look like.  Right now, he gets up anywhere between 5 and 6 am, eats, and then goes right back down until anywhere from 7:45 to 9 am.  He goes to bed at 10:00pm.  Also, my husband doesn't want to put him down for a nap between the 7:00 and 9:30 feeding--so he isn't getting a nap then.

So my questions are:

1) Is he too young to put on a 3.5 hr EASY?

2) Can you help me figure out his routine if I wanted to start him at 6:00am and put him down for the last time between 9:00 and 10:00 pm?

3) Any suggestions as to how to get him to only breastfeed again?  I would like to quit giving him bottles, but he barely eats anything from the breast!  I have already tried not giving him bottles and figuring he'll eat a lot when he's hungry.  That just doesn't happen.  He'll eat a little more when he's really hungry, but he won't eat the amount of food he is supposed to.  I called the lactation cosultant today.  She suggested the new lotion I switched to may have caused it--although I don't think it has because I think this problem existed before I switched lotions.

He is not too young to be on 3.5 hr EASY.  But keep in mind, that his routine will be adjusting very slowly over the next 6 weeks just by natural course of events.  Do not get hung up on 3 hr EASY vs 3.5 hr EASY as his cues will let you know where he should be.  So, he may have one feed where it's 3 hrs, and another feed at 3:20, and another and 3:30.  Jsut go with the flow and watch his cues.  He'll let you know when he's hungry.  As far as the routine, the end of the day always gets a little weird as it all depends on how his day ends up.  I always would feed my DD just before bed at about 7ish.  That would sometimes mean she would get any where between 1.5 - 3 hrs between her last feed and the one prior.  The evening routine would be slightly adjustable depending on where we ended up in the day.  So for you, since you want him to wake at 6ish, you would do the same but the last feed would be about 5:30ish.  And then you would get him up at 9ish for the dream feed.

as far as breast feed only, I would suggest no lotion at all for awhile if this is a possible culprit.  I know my DD just didn't like very many strong scents.  Make sure that the nipples on the bottle are slow release so he has to work harder at the bottle than the nipple.
Also, something else to consider.  Could he be done?  babies are much more efficient as they get older.  By the time my DD was 12 weeks she could down both sides in 7 minutes flat.  The kid is a no nonsense eater!  I should point out too, the first week home from the hospital, a feed could have lasted 1hr 15 min easily!  It may be a struggle simply because he's trying to tell you he is done!  When he's done at the breast, just let him be.  If he can go 3 hrs to his next feed, then he is definitely getting enough.
