Dropping a feed - moving to 4hr EASY
« on: December 05, 2007, 21:02:02 pm »
Hi there,

I have been moving my LO from the 3hr easy to 4hr easy for over a week now.  We are following the transition schedule in the book and things are going great.  He was starting to wake up numerous times in the night, short naps, etc. so we decided it was time to make the switch.

My question is about dropping the last feed.  To get down to feeding only at bedtime and the last feed at 3, do you continue to push back the 2:15 feed slowly until 3, and move the 5pm until it meets the 7pm one?  Or just drop the 5 cold turkey?  I'm confused as if I start to move it closer he's not going to eat as much at bedtime.  We are dreamfeeding at 11pm.

Thanks!
amy

We just pretty much dropped it, if I remember right.  But, we also went cold turkey and didn't gradually move from one to the other.  I think we had a few NW from hunger, but in a few days she adjusted her oz up during the day and quit waking at night.  I haven't looked at the transition in the book recently, but if you're gradually moving from 3 to 4hr EASY, I would think you would be pushing the feeds further and further apart ill you get to 3 and 7.  I will say this - dd has never been able to go 4hrs between the pm feed and the night time feed (3, and 7 feeds).  Hers have always been more like 3 and 6:30 which worked fine, because then she'd have her bottle and then a tad bit of activity time before sleep.  Hope that makes sense - I'm sure other folks will be along and offer some better thoughts on the matter :)

How old is your LO?

I'm assuming you're talking afternoon and not middle of the night.

I would continue to push back each of the feeds until the 5 & 7 meet.  It may mean that for a while until you are fully transitioned you will have 2 feeds fairly close together.  Your DS may refuse the 7:00 feed for a bit as the 5:00 gets closer and closer to the 7:00.  Be prepared to potentially DF a little earlier.

I think we gradually moved the 2 feeds closer together, and the 7 became more of a bedtime "top off" until we finally phased out the earlier one.  We did move the df earlier by a half hour too.
