Vegetarian sources of Omega 3's anyone?????
« on: December 06, 2007, 16:57:25 pm »
Can anyone reccomend anything - we're veggie and don't eat fish and I'm getting concerned that I should be actively trying to include this apparently miracle substance in our diet - just have no idea how to do it!!! Have been to health food stores to look for supplements but they're either fish based or for adults only.

Ideas gratefully received!
Sue

walnuts, flax and canola oil and soya oils.

What about omega 3 enriched eggs? :)  (if you do eat eggs).  I know milk and bread also has some omega 3 in them

Ground flax seed has lots of fiber and omega 3s--it can be added to lots of baked goods, sprinkled over salad or hot cereal, etc.--has a slight nutty flavour, but quite subtle.  Flax seed oil has more concentrated amounts of omega 3s, but lots of calories.  You can just add it to stuff or you can make salad dressing with it.  If either of these are subjected to high heat, the omega 3s are destroyed, so you can't really cook with the oil and even baking can destroy the omega 3s in the ground flax seed.

In the past we have added 'Clearspring Omega Oils' to dd's porridge and evening meal, just a teaspoon or so. Here's a link to tell you all about it.

You've promted me to think we should start again. I sometimes find it difficult to get hold of though.

I think you may find some supplements for kids, we have them available in pharmacy and in supermarkets here.  Brands like Cenovis and Blackmores have children's supplements. We also found some omega 3 added to yogurt here, it is not an animal source but rather from seaweed or something similar, a sea plant that fish like salmon eat, which is how they get omega 3 in the first place!

I use a supplement for DD on occasion with iodine added as well as it's often deficient, at least here in Australia. It used to be a 'positive contaminant' in cows milk products as it was used in cleaning dairy teats etc.  It also appeared that salts were not available as 'iodised' although I wonder if that's improving as I've seen more instores than last year.  There was talk in medical literature of in increase in kids with iodine deficiencies and health problems.

I use it as I want to be sure she has enough, she eats well but fish is not always on our menu, although we also use canola oil and occasionally iodised salt on our eggs and potatoes. I think I need to get some flax seed oil too, sounds good!

Linseed oil?

Have a look in Holland and Barrett - they're bound to have lots of different options for you
