afterpains... 11 months later?
« on: December 10, 2007, 22:43:46 pm »
So I have AF at the moment (started at 10 months this time rather than 13, which I was not pleased about, but that's another post entirely), and this morning when I was feeding Iris, I had contraction-like cramps, just like mild afterpains.  Later, when I went to the bathroom (way TMI alert tons of blood poured out.  Now I'm back to my normal flow.  It happened again at the next nursing, minus the pouring out of blood.  Weird.  Has this happened to anyone else?

Yes--this happened to me with my first few periods while I was bf.  Mine resumed at 6 months.   :P

Yes, mine came back with a flow of Niagara Falls ;D, that and I am all over the board for length of cycle, anywhere between 25-31 days. I just had my yearly check up and my doctor figured out my B12 and my iron is seriously low (though I don't have the normal symptoms of low energy, etc.). Keep a check on your iron level if your flow continues very heavy.

It wasn't the gushing so much that freaked me out (that used to happen on occasion before), it was the afterpains-like cramping during BFing.

Bethany, I'm glad to know that I'm not alone.

My afterpain-like cramps were never super painful--but definitely weird feeling and definitely associated with bf.  I only remember it happening the first couple of periods.   Nice to know I wasn't imagining it as it's happening to someone else too.

nipple stimulation doesn't just stimulate the the uterus when you're trying to induce labour! Hope it gets better soon!

Haven't felt it today, and still on AF.  Yeah, I knew there was definitely a physiological reason for the cramping (and yes, Bethany, what you describe is exactly what I felt... not really painful, but like a really mild version of afterpains), but I hadn't ever felt it before with Lilah... I wonder if the body gets more sensitive to the nipple stim-oxytocin-uterine contraction connection with each baby?  Could make sense, seeing as afterpains are much stronger with the second baby, and I've heard they're stronger still with the third?
