question about night/early morning feeding
« on: December 16, 2007, 17:51:19 pm »
I have just started EASY today with my 15 wk old.  I have one question about it.  After you do the dream feed at 11, and lets say she wakes up at 5am, do I feed her then or wait until 7am?  And if i do feed her at 5am do I feed her again at 7am?
Thanks in advance for the advice.

At 15 weeks, she probably still needs the calories.  I would go ahead and feed her at 5.  If you want to begin your day at 7:00, then go ahead and feed her at 7.  She may not eat a lot having just ate at 5, but the 5:00 feed will get later and later or just disappear altogether.  Once that happens, you already have the 7:am established breakfast

If you notice your lo isn't eating much at 7am due to the 5am feed you can always lessen the 5am feed (if breast feeding, lessen the minutes or lessen the ounces of bottle feeding) or if formula feeding you could dilute the formula in more wanter than needed (for example, say your lo usually drinks 4oz of formula at that time, put 2oz worth of formula and 4oz of water....so, the same amount of water and less formula).  Hope that made sense  ;)

thanks both of you, I will try it!  I have another question.  I am using the book transition schedule from a 3 hr feed to a 4 hour feed and also trying to get in a 2 hour nap in the morning and afternoon and then the evening mini nap.  (if you have the book you can refer to pg 230)  Right now I am on days 12-15 which says she should be taking a 2hr nap in the morning by now.....which she is not.  What I am asking is do I go to the next step or keep working on these days?  I hope you understand what I am saying, if not I will try to clarity better, thanks.

Well, the thing with the times in the book is that it's based on an average.  Not all lo's will take a full 2 hour morning nap.
How long is her nap now at that time?

Since you posted, has that nap changed at all?

FWIW, my lo almost never took a 2hr nap in the am.  Take a look at her total day sleep.  If it's between 14-18 hrs, you're probably in good shape!

My baby wakes up at 7am and I put her down for a nap at 9.  She is usually really tired by then.  She only sleeps about 30-45 minutes and then wakes up.  Sometimes she goes back to sleep after being awake for a half hour and sometimes she doesnt.  How do I get her to sleep longer periods?  Should I have her nap time at 9:15 or even 9:30?  I dont want her to become overtired though.  I dont quite understand why she doesnt sleep longer.
Thanks

30 minute naps usually = overtired
45 minute naps usually = needing more A time

So to extrapolate on what Melissa said, if she's sleeping 30 minutes, you may need to put her down earlier.  If she is sleeping 45 minutes, then you will need to put her down later.  based on every thing else you've said, it would make sense that she may need to go down a wee bit earlier.
