Gas/Constipation Cries in the night
« on: January 02, 2008, 13:22:58 pm »
My 11 week old starts crying out around 3 AM every morning until we get him up around 6-7:00 AM.  When I go in there, his eyes are closed, but I can hear him passing gas and can see that he's been writhing about from the discomfort (sometimes he's on the complete opposite side of the crib!).  He seems to settle a little bit once I put him back in his spot and lay my hand on him, but then it starts all over again in about 10-15 minutes. What can I do to ease his discomfort and help him stay asleep through this? I can't keep staying up during this block of time to try and coax him back to sleep! Help! I'm exhausted!

One thing to note is that he's always constipated so the pediatrician suggested giving him 1-2 oz of apple juice daily to help with it. It does help, but I guess not enough.....

Thanks in advance!

Hmm, I'd be a bit concerned about the apple juice, personally - but then my LO is nearly 1 year and still can't digest apples, they give her horrible tummy ache, dodgy poo and nasty nappy rash.  So I am probably biassed!  Did you notice if this night time writhing around got worse or better when you started the apple juice?  You might want to make sure that you give the apple early in the day to avoid it causing problems at night.

I am not sure what else to suggest, we have never had problems with constipation  - I am sure others will have some ideas for you

I'm just reading along here I'm afraid - our 2.5 week DS seems to be the same.

Since 10pm last night - he slept 2 45mins till 4am - and hs not slept more than 30mins today.  He's cried loads and we don't know how to help him

DS is BF - but we're lso wondering if he's a bit constipated tbh - he only had 1 small BM yesterday and nothing so far today despite lots of grunting and at times, straining - he is passing lots of wind though.

Is your child spitting up a lot.  Noah was called an unhappy spitter.  He ended up having reflux.  Does your child cry alot after he/she eats?  If yes then you might want to see a GI doctor.  There might be other meds that might help the constipation but not sure what age they are safe for. Noah is on one for constipation but he is 15 months.  Good luck the first few months are tough but they do get better
