What time should 2nd nap be?
« on: January 11, 2008, 09:31:29 am »
My DS who is 13 months old is currently struggling with his pm nap.

Our schedule looks like this

7am wake up
8.15 breakfast
9.45-10 naptime
11.30-12 wake up
12.30 lunch
2.30 naptime (sometimes goes off straightaway sometimes plays or cries and doesn't settle until after 3pm)
5.15pm dinner
6.15pm bath
6.30pm bottle
7pm bed

What is the latest time that they can go down for their nap in the afternoon at this age and for how long if they have slept for 1.5-2hrs in the morning?  The other day he slept from 3pm until 4.30pm and then took ages to go to sleep at bedtime.

Your first nap is really long for this age.  This is exactly the age my DD1 was when she started to refuse her second nap, because she was still taking a two hour snooze in the morning!  I would limit the first nap to one hour, no more.  You may or may not want to do this cold turkey, depending on your LO-- that's how I did it with DD1.

At that age, dd1 was doing 45mins in the morning & about 1.5-2hrs in the afternoon & her routine was something like this:

6am - wakes
9-9:45 - morning nap
1-2.30 - afternoon nap
6.30 - bedtime

I think if your ds is sleeping 1.5-2hr in the morning, then he probably won't need an afternoon nap until at least 3.5hrs later. Some babies wouldn't even take an afternoon nap on a morning nap that long (or even as long as 1hr to be hoest) so its up to you if you want to shorten the morning nap or not... some babies do better on long morning nap & short afternoon catnap. I wouldn't expect the pm nap to be anymore than 45mins though & if it was, I would wake him up so that he can go to bed at the right bedtime. The latest I would let him sleep for a 7-7.30pm bedtime is 4pm.

Shortening the morning nap did wonders for dd1... she took a solid 1.5-2hr nap in the pm. Dd2 was a little difficult & there were plenty of times we were stuck taking 2 short naps. If you go down the route of shortening the morning nap, I would too look at doing it slowly... maybe cut 15mins or so every couple of days until you get to 45mins or 1 hr. Bump up the pm nap. On a 45min morning nap, my girls were able to stay awake for 3.5hrs max before they needed an afternoon nap.

hth a little

Thanks for your replies.

Well DS is now over his cold and teeting and the last couple of weeks we are down to 1 hr 15 mins in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon, which seems to being doing the trick at the moment.  If he starts to refuse the pm nap again, then I'll cut back a bit more on the morning nap.  He certainly seems to need his sleep at the moment.

How will I know when he is ready to go to 1 nap and what time should the 1st nap be?

Thanks

Good to hear he is doing better

Some of the signs for us were:
1. taking a long nap in the morning & then nothing in the pm
2. taking a long nap in the morning but then taking a long time & finding it very hard to settle for the pm nap.
3. waking up earlier and earlier in the morning

If he's happily taking 2naps & nights are not affected then I would let him sleep as long as he is & not worry about it until his sleeping requirements change

Good luck!
