12 month baby-how to know when to increase bedtime A time?
« on: January 12, 2008, 00:51:50 am »
Hi, it is me again.  My lo is 12 months now and recently has increased her A time to:

3.25 morning
3.75 afternooon
4 before bedtime-has been doing this for quite some time.

Today we put her at her usual 4 hour A time before bedtime and she had hard time falling asleep.  How do we know if it is time to increase A time for bedtime? Do we do it by 15 minute increments?  Today it took her 1/2 hour to fall asleep--4.5 Awake.

Me again :). There is no harm in trying but if it were me, I would leave it alone as it doesn't really bother me that dd sometimes takes up to 30mins to fall asleep. Some babies need to do their own wind down & they don't always have to fall asleep within 5mins.

HI Siria,

can you post your whole routine love?

Also, I will pop this over the toddler sleep forum as she is now a toddler - that way you can get more age specific advice.  (I'll have a look too...)

Siria, sorry if this thread is confusing. I merged the two topics together cause they are pretty much the same :). This way we can all help you under the 1 thread.

:)  Thanks Layla and Aly for moving it to Toddlers...can't believe lo is a Toddler  ::)
This is her routine:

Awake 7
S  10:15  (length of nap varies-from 35-1 hour)
Lunch 12:30
S:  Depending on length of last nap- usually awake time is 3.5-3.75)
Nap will last 1.15 min)
Usually we put her down at 4 hours Awake.  But wondering if she is ready to extend that time too.
Sleeps 11 hours at night, no NW.

My advice is, don't move bedtime back at all!

We decided to keep our LO up later in the eves at around 11/12 mths and moved his bedtime from 7pm to 7:30pm. He generally took the same amount of time to fall asleep and woke at the same time in the morning so simply lost 1/2 hr night sleep. I think this was a BIG factor in him becoming seriously OT when he started to transition to one nap. We had a very bad time with the transition with lots of NW and EW (from 4:30am on some occasions!). I know you're working on A times rather than clock times to work out bedtime, but that will all have to shift majorly when you transition to one nap anyway.

I'm with Layla on this - don't worry if it takes her a while to get to sleep. Sometimes toddlers  ;) need to spend some time processing their day before they fall asleep.

Thanks Momma Holmes.  I will leave as is as Layla and yourself suggested.   Did you go by wake time rather than clock time?
How did you do it?

Our transition to one nap was pretty disastrous as he was chronically OT before I really got my head around what was going on. I used to do everything by A times but actually what sorted out the 2-1 transition was sticking to clock times.

My advice to you at this point is simply, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Don't be tempted to fiddle around with her routine to try and get it 'perfect', she sounds fine to me at the moment  :)

Momma Holmes: You are right, if it is working and sleeping through night, I will not make changes.  I will go by A times since it is working for now.
And she seems well rested and happy overall.
Thanks for your help!

Glad to hear it. I think the major problems start for most people because they think their LOs are ready for the switch and just jump to one nap too soon. It seems fine for the first couple of days, in fact they nap better than ever, but gradually the naps get shorter, OT accumulates and before you know it, all naps are a battle, they're waking up through the night and refusing to go back to sleep from 5:30am! It took us the best part of four months to recover from these early mistakes.

Stick with two naps as long as you can because, trust me, you don't want to go there!

Can I just say "here here" to not mending something that is not broken! My DD is now 15 months and still only on a 4˝hr A  time before bed, we started letting it slip to around 5hrs and after just over a week we were getting NWs and EWs, I was comparing her to others and thinking she should be able to handle longer but she is a short napper, luckily she will sleep up to 14 hours at night so we don't have to start the day early. Your routine sounds great so I wouldn't push any A times until she is really protesting on a day to day basis!
