Potty trained, but now won't go to sleep
« on: January 18, 2008, 04:30:08 am »
My LO potty trained right before 2, she's about 2 and 2 months now and we have often struggled with sleep.  Well her new ruise is that she needs to go potty.  Then she'll sit there for as long as I let her and she will go.  I get her off and back into bed, for about 3 mins then it's to the potty again.  I KNOW this is a game but the problem is that she does actually go.  And then after I'm sick of it - about 5 times later, I'll physically pull her off the potty and put her in a sleep sack with a safety pin on the bottom so she can't get out.  and finally she'll go to sleep with some tears.
Any suggestions about how to improve this.  I don't want to discourage using the potty, but this whole thing takes about half an hour and just isn't good I don't think.

Is this hapening before she goes to sleep or at night?

Can you tell me what her schedule is like? She might be stalling bedtime cause she's not ready for bed

My ds did this!!! We stuck it for a few months then due to other things happening (mainly my miscarriage) I felt I'd had enough of the ridiculous charade!!!  ;) We now take him to the toilet before bed, then allow him maximum 2 more trips which have to be during storytime (he has 2 books in bed) or immediately after them, before we've left the room for sleep. We routinely do the "this is last time" for lots of different aspects of life and so do so for this as well-"make sure you go properly Matthew as this is the last time". He protested at first but we just kept saying "no Matthew we told you that was the last time. Goodnight darling" kiss and leave the room (we do WI/WO anyway but felt as this was new territory he needed the verbal reiteration too). If he wakes later AFTER being asleep then that's different and we take him to the toilet. He still wears a pull up in bed but tbh that's more for Mrs Lazy Washing me rather than him needing it,lol!!! I know some people keep a potty in lo's bedroom so they're free to use it through the night but I know for my little tornado that would be far too much fun and he'd never settle to sleep!! Bless them, the monkeys!!!

this is before going to sleep, inthe night she is fine.

Maffoos mummy, I think you're right, I'm just going to have to get tough.  She has been pt'd long enough that it shouldn't interfere.  I'm just sick of fighting her for her to go to sleep

DD is also PT but like maffooos mummy we still use a nappy at nap & night time as DD tends to pee the instant she wakes up.

DD also tried to use this a stalling trick at bedtime she would tell me she needed to poo, which at that time she never told me during the day it was always wee wee's the poops I just seemed to catch through timing it right.

So I guess what I'm saying is that I agree with PP's your just gonna have to get tuff as they will try anything at times to stall going to bed and once its a habit, well  ::)

Does she wear a pull up to bed or have you been a braver lady than me?!?! With the pull up I felt if he really genuinely needed to go then he could although after days at home he's always dry in the morning anyway. He's sometimes wet in the morning after a nursery day-they only have drinks at set times and is so thirsty when he gets home it's not unusual for him to down 1-2 beakers of juice and a large cup of milk before bed with not enough time to get through his system before bed!  ??? It's tricky as it's great she's seeing potty training as such a fun thing but is probably no bad thing that there are some rules with the monkey-ing around,my ds would literally squeeze tiny drops out but had been going nuts beforehand begging for the loo, aarrgghh!!! MONKEY!!  ::)
