our Lo is 15 months old, and is a major thumbsucker. well, so much so that his skin on his thumb as split and has a little infection. we have wrapped his whole hand, which is why write. he can't fall asleep without his thumb. he wails! we try and comfort him, and as soon as we leave the room, he starts up again. he was such a great sleeper. now he wakes up cause he has no thumb to sooth himself with. i feel like i am back at square one, trying to get him to sooth himself....how frustrating!!!! my nervous are shot! he is constantly whining when he is awake, cause he is tired i would think.

any thoughts on how i can help him to fall asleep. everything else is the same.

Oh ((((Hugs))))

DD1 is also a thumb sucker and couldn't get to it when she was about 21 months and admitted to hospital and put on an IV  :(  She was distraught  :(

We did help/encourage her to suck her other thumb and this did help a bit but she wasn't happy about it.  We encouraged her to do it during the day when she wasn't too tired and tried to give her 'practice' at doing it.  It was almost 'back to front' for her, as it meant she had to hold and rub her blanket in the opposite hand so she found it difficult but she did manage.  I think we held her hand to help her keep thumb in for the first night.   ::) :)

My other thought would be whether you *have* to have it bandaged at night time?  Could you do a nap in the car/buggy to make sure he is rested (maybe motion would help in the absence of thumb?) and then let him have the thumb at night time?

Just some thoughts.  I'm sure there is a better way!

My DD1 is also a major thumb sucker, and the times she's been unable to suck due to nasal congestion have been the crabbiest times of her life!  I never thought of teaching her to use the other thumb (DUH!)  What a great idea, I'd try that.

Sorry I can't be of much help, just wanted to send some hugs your way since I know exactly what you're going through!

Take care!

thanks Nicola for the thought of getting him used to his other thumb, i have seen him try it out, but like you said everything is backwards for them. once he is asleep at night, he is good all night, just wakes up earlier than usual, it is the nap times that are killing me, and then the grumpiness afterwards from lack of sleep.

thanks for the encouragement ladies,i appreciate it!
