19 month old waking during naps
« on: January 23, 2008, 04:28:00 am »
For most days for the past week (about 6/7), my little guy has woken anywhere from 30-45 minutes into his nap, and started crying at a distressed level. We can go in, rub his back, shush, and within 5-20 minutes he'll go back to sleep and get another 45 minutes to another hour and a half (okay, just one day. . . it was great!). He clearly wants more sleep as he's not trying to get up while he's crying, just crying.

I'm not sure what's going on. He's still got an eye tooth coming through, so it may be that's bothering him. I don't think he's going down overtired as he's pretty consistently getting 12 hours of sleep at night (approx 7 PM to 7 AM), awake 5.5 to 6 hours before nap, and then about 4 more before bed. Naps total anywhere from 1 hour 15 mins to 2 hours, very extremely rarely longer.

His night sleep hasn't been affected. I don't want to start a habit of having to "help" him back to sleep if it's not needed, but the crying seems to get to the point where I know he'll get himself past the point of going back to sleep if I don't intervene. Anyone had anything similar? Any advice on what to watch for?

Thanks in advance.

Could be the eye teeth... when Jasmine was teething eye teeth she would wake 45mins into her nap & cry at a distressed level too  :(. Perhaps try some teething pain relief before nap to see if that helps.

It could also be that he's overtired by nap time. I would try the nap earlier... maybe 15mins earlier. Some babies can't handle 5.5-6hrs until well into age 2

Thank you for the response. It just may be that tooth; we had a day or two with no waking during naps, and glorious 1 h 45 to 2 h of sleep (of course, while babysitter was here), and then again today went poorly (no babysitter; husband at work; just one very tired and 6 month pregnant mama--sigh!). I think I'll try the Tylenol tomorrow before his nap tomorrow if I see drooling again. It's so odd, though; no problems at all during the night. I guess sometimes we never know!

Hugs! I hope its just the tooth & he goes back to having his 1.5-2hr naps for you daily to give you a much needed rest :)

Let me know how it goes :-*

Leorah also wakes up 40 mins into a nap crying when she is teething, I put gel on her gums and she will usually go back for another 40 mins, it is also her eye teeth that are bothering her  ::)
