4 month fussiness??
« on: January 24, 2008, 13:20:01 pm »
DS is a textbook/touchy baby.  He turned 4 months last week.  For the last week or so he's been so fussy.  He fusses constantly when awake.  He doesn't enjoy any of the activities we normally do (ex. play on mat, tummy time, rocker/bouncy chair with hanging toys, read books, puppets).  We haven't been able to get outside much lately because it has been extremely cold.  THe only thing that makes him stop fussing is if we carry him around all the time.  He used to be able to entertain himself for 15 minutes or so (until this past week).  I've talked to a few moms who said their babies went through something similar at 4 months.  Is this something they just go through, or should I be doing something different with him??  I'm trying to transition him to a 3.5 hour EASY and I kept him awake for 1 hour 45 min(instead of his normal 1 hour 30 minutes) and he screamed for 35 minutes before falling asleep for his first morning nap  ???.  I carried him around for the extra 15 minutes I was trying to get him to stay awake (to try to not get him overstimulated/overtired), but that obviously didn't work.  He was fine when I was holding him, so I thought he had tolerated it fine.  Anyhow, is this fussiness a passing thing or am I missing something???

I'm not sure to be honest!!! The difficult naptime probably shows he's not quite ready for the 4 hour routine yet, although a couple of days can make a big difference so I'd try again then. It's possible he's getting used to you carrying him and is fussing until he has that contact? You could sitting next to him with your arm around him, lying down with him etc to wean some of the holding you're having to do? Hopefully someone will have a bit more constructive advice for you!!

Hi,
We are having similar problems!.  Eli is 17 weeks and has had several very fussy days!  I was actually relieved when I read your post becuase it does seem several others are going through the same thing around this age. We too have recently transitioned to a 4 hour shedule...I guess we just have to hang in there!

Hi, chiming in. My lo is 16 weeks and starting to go through similar. Starting to get really cranky with 'independent' activities such as playmat, swing, sitting in bumbo watching mommy do things (i.e. in the kitchen). I've spent more time playing with her, singing songs, reading etc. Was wondering if it was time to introduce some new toys, and I've also tried altering her current toys (i.e. adding the mobile to the swing where before I just played the music), putting her in the donut pillow in her gym mat so she has a new perspective on the dangling toys. The one solitary activity she still likes is the mobile in her crib.
