want to introduce formula
« on: January 24, 2008, 19:18:23 pm »
my lo is 4.5 months & starting to get very distracted while nursing. i'd like to start introducing formula but am scared. our first attempts did not go well (vomitting, runny poops) & i gave up quickly .. looking back, probably too quickly, it was just so easy to nurse (once my oversupply issues were fixed, thanks to this site!)

ideally i'd like him to be on bottles for the day & BF'ing at night only if he needs it, but we're thinking he'll soon be able to go without the nightime BF

he's 18 pounds & has been on solids for almost a month doing very well. textbook on a 4 hour routine.

where do i start??

i am also scared b/c i had an oversupply problem with forceful letdown so am nervous about pumping for mixing with formula

yaya we haven't checked yet but i should've said that i gave him 6oz of straight forumla when he was 2 months old & he'd only been EBF, so yeah he had a reaction to it. it was too much too soon.

am offering the evening feed in bottle tonight (well DH is) & will start adding formula tomorrow morning :)

agree with emma, not sure that there is a too early or too much formula, its more likely that particular did work out...

too much too soon.. my mom said it was like giving him steak & potatoes when all he's ever had was soup. which made sense to me. i just shouldn't have used so much all at once for his first time... unless thats uncommon?? i really don't know... i used soya at first, which i found out later that is one of the worst to start with.. its b/c sometimes i have lactose problems & i noticed mucous in his poop when i eat a lot of dairy.. anyway it didn't work out for us at all. his pedi said he didn't think he had a lactose allergy so to use Nestle Good Start. i have the pre-mixed & the powder...

so the bottle did NOT go well. DH tried to give it to him while i left the room & he screamed, hollered, spit the nipple out & ended up wasting 3oz of BM all down his bib. now i'm scared to try forumla b/c i don't know how to start.... if he won't take a bottle what do i do? i'd rather NOT have to pump b/c of oversupply issues so if we did the "starving bottle" way of doing things (don't give him breast until he's hungry enough to take the bottle) then i'll become super engorged...

this just sucks. before he was 3 months he'd take a bottle any time we offered it. i wasn't consistent with it though, didn't know to give it at least once a day. now he's so much more self aware & he just KNOWS that bottle is not by boob... monkey
