Sick Toddler & Sleep - WWYD?
« on: February 04, 2008, 16:12:42 pm »
So I've had a NASTY sore throat and cold for a week now and of course DD got it - fever since Friday (as high as 104 at times, or down to 100 at others). Took her to the doctor yesterday to make sure ears, etc clean, not strep, etc - all clear. Last night she didn't fall asleep until about 9 (she was uncomfortable, etc). She was crying around midnight but not awake - DH rubbed her back for a minute or two until she was calm. Then she cried out at 5:45 but didn't fully wake and then woke at 6:30 saying she needed to go potty and that her belly hurt. She peed and was hot (fever 102.8). Gave her Tylenol in crib, she asked for milk but only took a sip and then she fell back to sleep from about 7 or a little after until 9:40. Fever 100.3 now with Tylenol. She's congested but not horribly so and says her mouth/throat hurt although she did eat some bagel and drink some milk around 10am.

Normally she naps around 12:30 or 1 (about 5.5 hours after waking) and I normally wake her after 1.5 hour nap. But what would you do today given how late she woke and that she is sick (although at the moment in a pretty good and alert mood)? I was thinking maybe put her in crib at 1:45 or 2 (even though that's only 4 hours or little more awake) and if she falls asleep let her sleep one hour? But I'm never sure when they are sick!

TIA as always!

Oh hope she is better soon.  Put her to bed as soon as she seems tired and and let her sleep as long as she likes.  Sleep is a great cure and the best for recovery.  Tonight is probably going to be a bit late and disrupted anyway, so let her get it in where you can. Think of yourself when you aren't well, you just sleep in small bits, so I figure the same for these LO's. Tomorrow is another day, IMHO.  HTH.

Thanks Aisling. Not really concerned about her routine - but I just have such a hard time knowing when she will even want to sleep when she's sick- KWIM? Anyway, it's 12:30 now and she's seeming quite cranky and clingy so I just put on Little Bear and am making her some soup and will try for a nap around 1 I guess.

She's a Little Bear addict lately! Choosing it over her old favorites (Dora and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse) although she does still like Sesame Street sometimes before bed (cuddles with her daddy on couch).

Sadly though, no. She's still going bonkers in her crib at a little after 2 now. Don't think the nap is happening and can't take her out in stroller since she's had fever and all. She needs the sleep but between the congestion and discomfort and SO much total overnight sleep don't think it's going to happen... If not guess really early bedtime (for us anything before 8 is early).

Well she wanted out of her crib at 2:25 and she's having a bit of snack and juice now. It's almost impossible to get her to bed before 7:30/7:45 so we'll shoot for that I guess. This is going to be a LONG afternoon...

Our move was pushed back to Feb 10 (this coming Sunday) and we have SO much left to do! As for the bed, I think it's going to have to wait until we're settled - even though she keeps asking for one - maybe in April?

Aww Karen hope she feels better soon :-*.When Sasha is congested with a cold we put a bubble bath in the water which helps aid breathing. In the UK I think it called vicks vapour bath  ??? Might do something like that where you are.

And DD loves, loves, loves Little Bear too :-*

Thanks guys! I seem to remember the vapor bath irritating her (super sensitive) skin last time but maybe I'll buy one of those vapor plug ins and put that in her room tonight. She's ok for now - a little congested but fever almost normal and in good enough mood. Told DH we're going to have to shoot for 6pm dinner (instead of 6:30) and bedtime by 7:30 or sooner so we'll just see.

Stacy - so I guess that means no nap for Kaleb today? Ugh - sorry. I know what you mean about the bed though. I'd also love if DD would stay in her crib until she's done napping - so we'll see what happens after we settle into the new place (with just the crib).

I think she'd watch Little Bear all day but I'm a stickler about not too much TV!

Oh my goodness Stacy - that sounds insane! Sorry you had to do that especially while pregnant! I think we'll be ok just so much left to do before Sunday (not to mention once we move and start unpacking) and it's hard to get as much done with DD sick and myself not nearly 100%. Loading DH up on echinacea and zinc to try to keep him healthy at least!

Doh!!  International no-nap day ;)

I hate moving too Karen.Last time we moved Sasha was only 1 month old and they would only give DH 1 day off from work to help me pack >:(.
Never again despite the fact DH keeps on going on about "in our next house".if he wants to move he does it himself next time 8)!

LOL Andrea! We just moved a little less than a year ago - we sold our former apartment and were renting here while we looked for the house we've bought (and since done massive renovations on). This move is easier than the last because we organized better and are having the movers pack most of our things and because DD is older, but it's still hell!

Stacy - so true with the hand sanitizer! Plus, DH is more of a baby than DD or myself combined so got to keep him healthy!
