9 month old - no veggies or meat
« on: February 06, 2008, 19:12:05 pm »
Hello,
My 9 mth old loves her fruit (applesauce, pears, grapes, bananas, kiwis) and enjoys her cereals, breads, cheerios, and cheese, but I can't for the life of me get her to eat veggies or meat.  She usually looks at it and refuses, not even one bite.
Any suggestions?
Should I be worried that this is lacking in her diet?

Usually by around 9 or 10 months, babies will hopefully have some source of iron in their food, although there is some in cereals and some veggies.  Is she breastfed or on formula?  If breastfed, the iron in there is really well absorbed, so it's less of a concern.  I wouldn't be overly worried, but you might want to start experimenting with other forms of veggies and meat.  What sort of stuff do you do now?  Purees mostly or more finger foods?  Have you tried the chicken "sausages" (recipe in the recipes section I think)?  Pasta with ground up meat sauce or veggies blended into them might be an option.  There's also things like doing broccoli and cauliflower (well cooked) in a cheese sauce - I know my lo loved that at about 10 or 11 months.  Great for finger food.  Some kids will also try little chunks off our plate better than theirs.  Have you tried feeding her at the same time as you and giving her tiny tastes of what you're eating?

Thanks for your reply!
She receives 2 breastfeeds and approx. 2 formula feeds/day.
We have tried, and on rare occasion she takes it, sweet potatos and squash.  She has also tried peas, carrots, beans, cauliflower but won't take much, if any.  We're now giving her finger foods so that she can try herself, though they all end up on the floor. :) (not her fruit, of course, just her veggies and meat)
I did not give her meat pureed.
I will look up that chicken "sausages" recipe and try the broccoli or cauliflower with cheese sauce!  Thanks!
She is generally fed these foods at the same time as us.

Sounds like you're on the right track. You might want to check out the thread on Baby Led Weaning - some great ideas there.  She'll get there!
