Food allergy or not?
« on: February 16, 2008, 13:43:52 pm »
My DD occasionally has red bumps on her face that fade rather quickly. Sometimes they are there when she wakes up, sometimes after she eats, whether we have introduced a new food or not. I have attributed them in the past to excess saliva and now she has prefered to stomach sleep and maybe it was that. My doctor says its could be winter dry skin. Now she also seems to have a mild diaper rash.

What detriment am I doing if this is a mild food allergy and I am continuing to give her the food causing it?

It sounds more like a rash from saliva to me. It could also be from the cold weather. However it is possible that it could be an allergic reaction to something. Is it dry and does it irritate your lo?

Thank you for your response. It doesnt seem to bother her at all. I'm just concerned that if it is a food allergy, that it's really bad that I'm continuing to give her whatever is causing it. Will this cause other food allergies or make her more sensitive to things? Or will she build up tolerances for things? Thats what people are saying to me.

If there are no other symptoms and the rash is not bothering her and it does disapear quite quickly them I am inclined to tell you not to worry. I would however keep monitoring to make sure your lo does not develop any other symptoms if it is allergy related. Some of the medical profession do believe that if you are allergic to something that if you have it in tiny amounts that it does help build up a tolerance to it. We are not able to do that with my son as his allergies are not that mild. If you really do think it could be a food allergy you could try keeping a food diary to see if you can pinpoint what is causing the rash.

Thank you for your input. I didnt realize it was possible to develop a food allergy. As I was introducing these foods one at a time for at least 3 days, nothing happened. That's why I'm not sure what is causing it now.  But I will keep an eye on her.

Sometimes its possible to not show signs of an allergy straight away. Some people can tolerate a certain amount of a food before showing any symptoms. This is true of some of my sons allergies but most of his are more instant. Some people also only show mild reactions at forst like rashes but then they develop more symptoms the more they are exposed to the allergen. This is why I said to monitor your lo for other signs of allergic reactions.
