Teething and refusing her bottle
« on: February 29, 2008, 16:24:27 pm »
Hello again!!!

One more problem that I've had trouble with is my DD refuses her bottles when she's teething. I've tried bonjela before hand, putting it a  beaker and giving her cold milk but she just refuses. Normally she takes about 6-8 oz of milk each feed. Any ideas?
Thanks Rue  :)

Hi Rue,

Its actually quite common for kids to go in tiny hunger strikes while teething..if she won't take milk in a bottle how about trying to give her a cool yogurt or some other dairy product like cheese..sis she receptive to that?

My DS normally give sup food for almost a week while teethhing...but Bonjela does work for him coupled with distraction...

Try not to worry too much its quite ok, babies never starve themselves and DD's appetite will go back to normal as soon as the pain/swelling subsides.

Hi there, I'm in search of some answers.  I also posted in the "prop" for some horrible paci removal, but I suspect that my ds is waking due to hunger because he isn't taking very much milk because he is teething.  Did you go through that?  Did you feed her in the night?  My ds is 9 months old and his 8th tooth is coming in.  The problem is that I am taking his paci away and he is waking up in the night and I end up feeding him.  I don't want to trade one prop for another, any insight would be great!

Sorry I haven't replied SarahRB,
Struggling with a lack of sleep at the mo, but not because of DD, DH has man flue!!!!
Anyway, DD is on solids so I know she is taking enough food to see her through the night, she can nearly eat as much porridge as I can! It's her lack of fluids, calcium and protine that I was really worried about. We actually found that the NW had more to do with her dummy falling out so we stopped using one and although it's been a bumpy ride we are making progress. She's been waking once in the night but with a bit of patting she goes off to sleep.
She's teething still and it's getting more painful, today she struggled to go down for her nap and I don't like to give her any calpol during the day but I have been relying on it at night :( I don't like to do it but she seems to be in real pain :(.
I would love to hear of any alternative to medicated pain relief if anyone knows of any.

I'm waffling!! When we took her dummy away we gave her a taggy,(a blanket with tags on it ) and a soft toy, she's now taken to sucking the tags or the ear of her rabbit. Both are easier for her to find. Sometimes she finds her fingers!
I suppose both are a form of props but if she's beginning to self sooth then I think that's OK?!?!
Does your DS have anything like that that he could use?
Let me know how you're doing

It just depends so much on the kid, doesn't it?  I took away dd#1 paci and really regretted it.  I have no intention of *ever* taking away Meghan's.  LOL  Ok, maybe before college, but seriously, I found that once they can find it in the crib it's such a lifesaver.
Anyway, if he's not eating much because of teething, maybe try mixing the milk in with food?  Is he taking his solids ok?
If you think the NW are hunger, feed him, but if it's just a replacement for the paci, I think I would just give him back the paci (or a subsitute lovey like rue suggested) because it sounds like he needs something to get him through this teething.
Meghan is actually on tooth #8 right now too.  She's sucking her bottle in a weird, clicky kind of way.

Hiya

Yeah Rue I read in the book (im sure i did) that self soothing is fine, its when you have to get up and down all night giving the prop back!! If they can find it then that is fine.

My LO is only 6 months and she is refusing feeds when teething. She is on little solids, but been refusing them. I find that if she takes her milk then just focus on that. Sometimes she plainly refuses her milk, at these times I try teething powder and if that doesnt work then I give a little calpol, that's only when she is really refusing though and is not taking feeds. Today, she usually takes 6oz feed on average but she has only taken between 4-5oz in her feeds and no solids today.

Good luck xxx
