Dreamfeed and acid reflux
« on: March 08, 2008, 15:09:43 pm »
Hi

Well my little girl has acid reflux, she is on thickeners in her milk and ranitidine 3 times a day.

The problem we have is as so-

When we were giving the dreamfeed she was waking up in the night crying,a lot, every hr.

Well we tried her without the dreamfeed and she slept from 7.30pm - 5am, 5am - woke babbled, fell back asleep, 6am - put dummy in and she went back off till 7am.

Now we think what is happening is that after her dreamfeed we lay her down (she is propped already) yet the milk is still coming up a bit which is distrubing her sleep.

Do you think we should just not give the dreamfeed if she is sleeping so long without?

Things seEm to be o.k without the dreamfeed so I wouldn't give LO one . It's trial and error with dremfeeding the refluxer ,some are o.k with it but some really struggle after .

Thanks for your reply. Was just worried Id be depriving her and also setting her schedule out, today though she is still on her schedule.

Ill try it tonight again and see if any joy. Gosh to be able to sleep would be nice Lol. As after the dreamfeed we end up just consoling her most of the night and she wont feed, nothing can settle etc. She has her meds early on in the evening too you see so goes about 12hrs no med.

If she is not waking hungry then I wouldn't worry . Could you shift the last dose of zantac to just before bed ? but then if things are o.k as they are I wouldn't start messing with dosing times .

Hey,
We had the same problem with the df.  Because we couldn't burp him, he would wake up having spit up in bed.  We dropped it and he seemed to readjust and isnow starting to sleep later in the morning.

Ryans Mum - The prob with moving the med is, she has it half an hr before a feed, so at 6.30pm then feed at 7pm so if give it later then she will either be just fed or we will have to wake her. No win situ I think Lol.

Flutie - Hi, sorry to hear your LO is dealing with reflux too, how are you getting on with it? It is a horrid thing for them to have and totally misunderstood.

When we were doing split dose with zantac we did the first dose half hour after milk and solids at noonish  and then the same as you before last feed , his reflux did improve during the day but night were awful so we started to give feed first and then zantac before bed ( 30 mins /1hr after )and this helped. We then did the full zantac dose at bedtime which stopped the night wakings  ;D . It is trial and error when it comes to a refluxer and what works for one LO doesn't for another IYKWIM
We were also using infant gaviscon in feeds so it just worked better for us to give the zantac after . We did try giving before so it was in his system but had better results after .WE found that he was more comfortable going to bed an hour after a feed too so he had time to burp/spit up before laying down .

jasandbensmum,
I think our LO is turning a corner.  The last couple of weeks have been much better.  It is so hard to see them in discomfort.  I feel so helpless and sorry for him when he is hurting...especially because he doen't know why he is in pain!!
