What the heck do you do with Weetabix
« on: March 19, 2008, 08:07:39 am »
I had never heard of Weetabix until reading about it on this board.  I bought some the other day but other than just pouring milk on it and breaking it up, I have no real idea how you'd serve this to your LO.

Please...enlighten me!

Thanks!

N~

it is the only thing my son will eat. I crumple it up pour milk in it, heat it up in the microwave for about 40 sec and then stir it so that it looks like porridge... oh and I put a bit of sugar with it otherwise it taste like sawdust. Some people like to add pieces of banana in it.

When I used to eat it as a child I would sprinkle sugar on the top, pour milk over it and eat it like that - not break it up in pieces...

Let us know if your lo likes it :)

I find its better if you add pureed fruit to it.  If you have a look at the weetabix website they keep doing a big thing about different ways to have it - might be of some use to your older kids.

You can add banana or raisins to it or it's nice with yoghurt and berries.

Thanks for the ideas.  I'm pretty good when I've got a recipe but when I have to come up with creative ways to make something myself I'm at a loss.  I know it's just cereal but it did look like it'd taste a bit like sawdust ;) so I figured I'd need to doctor it up a bit.

We'll give it a try in the morning.  I'll let you know what he thinks.   :)

Ds is on a Weetabix kick atm, so he has 1 bar, sprinkled with ground flax seeds (very healthy), and milk over the top. He then likes to mix it around so it goes really mushy and then add more milk ;)

I'd advise against putting sugar on it for your lo initially - they don't need it, even though to us the taste is very bland. That's how we've managed to get the flax seeds on as his 'sprinkles' instead. The fruit's a good idea too.
Caroline :)

DD eats it every day. Has done for almost 3 years, soggy with milk, doesnt know sugar exists. Ds is now the same  ;D
I could never stand the stuff. I know there was a big thread on this about this time last year.
Oh and you have to let it stand for a few mins to go soggy, it's not nice crispy, well for us anyway. So when I get up to do ds bottle I milk the 2 bowls of weetabix then add a bit more milk before serving  ;)

You can also spoon some yogurt over it instead of milk and let it sit for a few min. That softens up the weetabix just enough but also gives the yogurt some crunch.

I might be the only person on earth who actually likes the taste of it without sugar. DH thinks it tastes like cardboard. :P

Gave it to him this morning and he ate it up.  I just broke it up, poured in some milk, added some mashed very ripe banana and then warmed it in the microwave.  It was so easy and a great quick breakfast when I don't have time to make his usual oatmeal or muesli.

I also love that it can pretty much be a different breakfast every time depending on what you add to it.

Thanksagain! :-*

The great thing is its cheap too!! With my first I spent a fortune on the baby cereal packet mixes you can buy!! With DS2 I used porrige and weetabix, so much cheaper!!

Both my boys are oblivious to the fact that you can put sugar on cereals and both love weetabix on its own!!
