Nightmares 34 month old
« on: March 20, 2008, 16:29:10 pm »
Hello, I read the FAQ post on nightmares and found it very helpful. Can anyone tell me how long this stage lasts or what's normal? My son is almost 3 and over the last 3 weeks has started waking during the night screaming. He calms within seconds when I comfort him, but it's escalating from once every other night to now 4 and 5 times every night. He wakes up screaming for "Mommy", and I have to go in. I'm back in bed in minutes, but I'm up every couple of hours now for a week straight. He takes a 2 hour nap and normally sleeps a good 12 hours at night. He only watches tv for an hour before bedtime which is Mickey Mouse, but that's nothing new.

Thank you for any help!

No real advice I am afraid. Can he tell you what he is dreaming about? When dd started talking about dreams I just told her they were like cartoons in her head when she is asleep. Now she wakes up and tells me about her 11 dreams, funny she always has 11  :)

I would probably shift the tv watching to during the day and do something quiet before bedtime...

Try asking him why he wakes at night and if he tells you its because he's dreamt something, try asking him what it is he's scared of?!? Could you give him a nightlight?

Also wondering if maybe the nap is getting in the way of him sleeping well at night. Could you try shortening it to 1.5hrs?

Thank you so much for the suggestions! I'll ask him what he's dreaming about and will shorten his naps. We're also trying to potty-train him, and I've noticed that he now wakes up when he pees in his diaper too. It seems like it's always something!

Thank you!
