could formula supplement be causing problems?
« on: March 22, 2008, 23:43:26 pm »
Not sure if this is the right place to post...move it if necessary...okay,  so in the last 2 weeks I started supplementing with Enfamil Lipil formula.  My son is 5mo old and up until then had been exclusively breastfed. I believe he also has a mild case of reflux, based on the amount, force and timing of his spit up combined with occasional discomfort.  I have never paid much attention to what if any effect what I was eating might have had on him.
So since I added formula to his life he has developed a small red rash on either side of his face.  My formerly very "regular,  stink free boy now goes 3-4 days between poops with smelly gas in between. Then yesterday when I gave him (what as since become his last) bottle of formula his cheeks flared up red and hot to touch.
Today was a rough, rough day it has been 4 days since his last poop.  He was super gassy and fussy and the cheek thing flared up after every breast feeding.....I am not giving him formula anymore.

Has anyone had similar experience(s) with formula?  Could it be an allergy?  If so, to what, since I never restricted my intake of dairy or other allergens?  Do you think my diagnosis of mild reflux could actually have been a misdiagnosis and he could actually have been responding to what I was eating? (BTW - I eat to much dairy for my own good).  If it was allergy related is it weird that it is showing up this late...5 mo?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.  In the meantime, no more formula and I am going to pay attention to what I am eating.  Oh, and one more thing....what do I do for a constipated 5mo. old?

Thanks - Britt
