should I drop a bottle?
« on: March 24, 2008, 17:52:51 pm »
Looking for advice.
LO 6 months 2 weeks, bottle fed formula, used to be a 7-8 oz boy on every feed except dream feed.
My LO has in the last week gone right off his milk and it is getting worse each day. Today he would only drink 2 oz when he got up and refused any more. He is just starting out on solids and following bw we are on pear for breakfast and pear which I mix with a bit of baby rice for tea at the moment.
He had 2 oz at 7.30 am then 1 ice cube pear at 9.00 am then 2 oz of milk (9.30 ish probably by time sorted eating etc)
He then was due his next feed at 11.30 am but only drank 1 oz. Left him be as he wouldn't drink it and went for short walk in pram to see snow. At 1.00 pm he drank 3 oz. At 3.30 pm he drank 6 oz. For tea at 5.30 pm he had 1 ice cube of pear mixed with a little baby rice. At 7.00 pm he had 6 oz and fell asleep on me. He will have a dream feed at 1050 pm when he will drink 7 oz (think need to reduce this but he keeps waking at 5 30 am and don't want this to get earlier - he doesn't get upset for food just has a chat to himself and a scratch at bars of the cot and then goes back to sleep although this can take 30/45 mins)
He is beginning to drink milk not long before a nap you have probably noticed, I have as well but am bothered about him drinking enough.
Should I be changing his feeds? He begins drinking well but it doesn't last long and he is banging bottle etc then stops drinking and refuses when try to give more. Will sometimes have a bit more if we do something else and then come back to it, often do bum change and then come back. Does he need to go longer between feeds? Can't seem to find answers in BWAYP book!? He has always drunk a lot when first up in the morning but now he won't.
What is going wrong?
Today after we dropped an oz on dream feed so only 6 oz he drank 4 oz when got up. had 2 ice cubes of pear at solids time but would not have any more milk. On next fed he had 3 oz and next feed 5 oz then had ice cube of pear mixed with baby rice and some sucked biscuit. He drank 8 oz on 7 pm feed. i know he is telling me something but not sure what and think too early for dropping so much milk so suddenly?

What time do you do your df at?  Have you tried not giving it to him to see if he still sleeps through the night?  I would probably wait until the weekend (my Mom said always try new things on the weekend when dh is home) and not give him the df and see what he does.  He might sleep through then wake up and drink his whole bottle... but he might not and just keep you guessing!!!   If he does wake up at 5:30 again I would probably just leave him be (unless he starts getting really upset) and see if he goes back down again.

My other thought based on what you wrote above is that his feeds are too close together.  At 6 months all three of mine were on a 4 hour schedule and close to the breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime schedule with four 8oz. bottles a day.   If his feeds are too close together he will most likely just get used to having a full tummy and only keep drinking enough (2-3oz) to fill up his tummy again.  At his age you should also always give him his bottle first and solids after - formula/milk is still their main source of nutrients at that age and solids are just to get them introduced to texture and new tastes.

HTH!

I agree but am trying to space out feeds, he has then when wakes and then4 hours later and then next one 3 an half hours later so that 3 and a hald hours to 7.oo pm bed bottle as he wakes about 7.30 am. Now trying to put solids in as well i agree feeds seem to be closer and feel is always feeding time. Should I stop milk with solids?
Can you give a idal plan outline putting in bottles and solids?

Here is what our schedule was like around 6 months with my lo's....

6:30/7:00 - wake, 8oz. bottle then some cereal

9:30ish - nap for about 1 hour

10:30/11:00 - 8oz bottle and afterwards 1 cube

1:30ish - nap anywhere from 1-2 hours

3:00/3:30 - 8oz.

4:00/4:30 - 1-2 cubes

5:00 - 45 minute cat nap

7:00 - cereal (would use 1-2oz. of evening bottle to mix up), bath, remainder of bottle and then bed

Up until 8 months or so we also did a dream feed with my third - usually around 11:00 and it was anywhere from 5 to 7oz. depending on how sleepy he was and what we could get in him.

All three of mine were sleeping through the night by two months (my first two without the dream feed believe it or not).  With my third, first we started pulling the time of the dream feed back and once it was around 10:00/10:30 I just started cutting the oz. down until he was at 2 oz. then I just stopped cause I didn't figure that 2oz. would make or break him sleeping through.
