anyone ever added anything to Cow's milk for LO
« on: March 26, 2008, 19:24:09 pm »
Hi,

I just started my LO (14 months) with cow's milk for the first time, and in a sippy cup too. (he is used to water for sippy cup but first time he had milk in a sippy cup). It was a bit of a disaster, he barely took 2 oz in when his normal feed at the time would have been 5oz.

Not sure if its a sippy cup issue or milk issues.

Anyways, has anyoneever added anything like Horlicks, Ovaltine etc in Cow's milk for LO's to kill the milky taste?

Thanks,
Mukta

I'd try a different cup for milk than you have for water and only try 1 milk feed at a time until your lo gets used to the new taste and new cup i.e. try 1 feed with the cows milk in a cup and leave the other ones as bottles until your lo starts taking a bit more.  Once he takes his usual amount from the cup then switch the others to the cup as well.  You dont have to do cold turkey and do it all at once and I found doing it gradually meant less worry about milk intake and less stress for my los.

p.s.  I have never added anything to my lo's milk to get them to take it.

Hi there, could you start by mixing in with his formula first?  So 5oz formula 1oz cows milk, then a couple days later 2oz cows milk to 3oz formula, and so on?  It would wean him onto it little by little without such a dramatic taste difference xxxx

Totally agree with Emma Lou as that's what I did with all three of mine and had no problems transitioning from formula to milk at all.  Also use one of those drink cups with the flip straw on the top for my ds's milk and water in a different container altogether.

Thanks ladies...I am only trying to swap one feed right now, but might follow Emma's guidance of slowly shifting the balance to shift the taste slowly. Should i do that with all or only 1 feed?

any specific reason why water should be in different cup than milk..he is not very good with the straw, and it is either sippy cup or open cup, and open cup is way to dangerous with LO!

We started cow's milk as a drink with meals and snacks, in the sippy cup but separate from milk feeds (we bf).  She takes 2-4 oz at a time, but it sometimes takes a while.

It isn't actually a good idea to mix formula & milk, can't remember the whole reason, but I tried it with ds#1 & he threw up every time & my health nurse explained why, just so long ago I can't remember.
It can take a while for them to up the amount, but give a week or 2 rather than mixing it.

I'm in Canada and my paedeatrician is the one who suggested a gradual transition if switching cold turkey didn't work.  I mixed formula and milk with all three of mine to transition and didn't have any problems.  I think that all the docs in the world should have one big conference together and get their stories straight  ???  Crazy.  I wonder though if you use different types of formula in Australia?  Perhaps that's the difference...

It is like most things that even if 90% of children are fine, but 10% aren't & so there are many recommendations are based on 10% it can cause problems.
I think it was more to do with not knowing if the cows milk was causing a problem or the protiens combining that was the issue...my ds was mostly bf so the fact it was only 1 formula a day may have been in the mix, but I know others have said the same on this site it isn't good to mix & I know my Sis (in the UK was also told not to do it)

I mixed formula with cow's milk for my dd to get her to take it and it did work. However about 3 months after drinking it with no problem she just used it. My dd is now nearly 5 and still will not drink it, but has lots of dairy in her diet still so not a huge problem.

We are in the UK and it was our health visitor who advised it. It just shows you that different health professionals have different opinions even when from the same country. However my health visitor advised I give my son ice cream when he was not eating any food as all children like ice cream. The crazy thing is we had just been discussing his allergies, dairy being one of them.

Mine drank 8 oz. bottles and I started with 6oz. formula and 2oz. milk and just upped the milk every week or sooner depending on how they were doing - also did it with every bottle.  GL!
