18 month old in bottom bunk?
« on: April 08, 2008, 14:39:04 pm »
Hi, just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to keep my 18 month old from climbing up the ladder into the top bunk of the bunk bed??  we will be moving him into his 3yr old sister's room soon, and they'll be sharing a bunk bed.  I realize they are a bit young for that kind of bed, but we really dont' have any other solution... the room is very small.  I'm concerned that ds will try to climb up the ladder to be up top... any thoughts?  it needs to be accessible for my daughter though.

Yikes! It's tricky because something she can access easily is probably going to be accessible for him too.
Anything you do to 'disable' the ladder - like cover it or put a block there - might actually make it more dangerous when he does ever try to climb it. I think all you can do is talk to him and hope he has some understanding and ask her to help you. Make his bed 'fun' with a fabric 'tent' effect and he might not want to leave it!
And consider if he was to fall what would he land on - can the fall be made safer?

i thought it would be a good idea to put some quilts or something down on the floor for the first little while...just in case.  it is a bit smaller bunk bed, not quite as high as some that we've seen, so that helps a bit.

i'm kinda hoping if i personalize each bunk as much as possible for each child that will help keep them where they are supposed to be...  and my dd is quite happy to tell ds when he's doing something 'bad'.. sometimes she's like a little warden!!

It is a tricky situation... didn't know how other people have dealt with it.

I know this is an afterthought since you already have the bunk bed, but can you trade it in for a trundle bed instead?  Bunk beds can be really dangerous and to be very honest, I think the ages of your children are too young in terms of safety.  My hubby's a doctor and seen many bunk bed accidents that didn't end well.  My apologies for being grim, but just wanted to put out the warning for all of your safety. :)
