Hi all,

I'm new to this board and I hope i'm in the right place.  Sorry - long bit of background for you.... My DD is 6.5months old and was diagnosed with reflux since she was 7weeks old.  I cut out dairy and eggs from my diet around that time as i noticed they made the reflux worse (I was exclusively BF) but it was always there.  We limped along with gaviscon and around xmas time DD seemed to have turned a corner.  We had been on EASY since she was born and finally she was napping better (before I was having to do loads of pat/shhh for daytime naps but luckily nighttime was ok!) and her routine could have come straight from Tracy's book, lol! We also took her to a cranial osteopath and after the second appointment DD was a changed baby - so smiley and giggly, it was wonderful.  I've always struggled to be strict with myself on the restricted diet but kidded myself that it wasn't making much difference and it was probably just one of those things and I stopped sleeping well and then I couldn't pump enough for DH to do the dream feed.  I was exhausted and depressed and was advised to do the DF with formula so that I could get sleep.  To begin with all seemed well and DD seemed better on formula than on my milk but about 2/3weeks afterwards DD started getting really tired.  i would go into her in the morning and she would be exhausted  and want to go back to sleep so I'd put her down and so it would continue all day with her only able to stay awake 45mins before whinging for sleep and her bedtime getting earlier.  She was still sick, not very much but continuously and being tired made it worse : ( .

Anyway we booked an appointment at the Dr and in the meantime I tightened up the dairy free diet and we gave her soya formula.  Within a week she was loads better and we saw the GP anyway and she said to continue with what we were doing.  Unfortunately just after that DD's sickiness and tiredness is gradually getting worse again.  I took the decision on Saturday to stop BF because the diet was really getting me down and also DD is very distractible in the day so she wouldn't feed off me then anyway.  I thought it was the right decision.

I feel guilty now because now I'm wondering if DD is reacting to the soya.  I've booked another GP appointment for a couple of weeks time.  Could I go back to BF after being stopped for 4.5days? There is still a bit there ... I just don't know what to do, it's making me so upset seeing her being sick all the time and I'm so fed up because I thought we'd turned a corner.  Weaning is a nightmare because DD is tired all the time.  I'm introducing food one at a time but it's really unclear what she's reacting to.  All she has is fruit and veg. She doesn't cry in the night and appears to go from 7pm - 6am (which is a godsend) but I don't think she's sleeping well, she's certainly not napping well! Can I get hypoallergenic formula from a pharmact without prescription before we see the GP?

Thanks for listening.

It is possible that your dd is reacting to the soy formula as it is common for babies that are allergic/intollerant to dairy to also be allergic/intollerant to soy. If it has only been 4.5 days since you stopped feeding I am sure you could go back to it. It might take a little hard work to build up your supply. It might be worth stopping all solids until you get your dd back to baseline either by building up your milk supply and eliminating all foods that you suspect cause a problem from your diet or requesting a hypoallergenic formula or elemental formula. At this age solids are only for practice anyway, all your dd's nutrition will come from breastmilk or formula.

Hypoallergenic formula is available OTH in some countries it just depends where you are from.

I agree with PP (kelly) that soy can also be a bugger for refluxers that are dairy intolerant.  My DS was MSPI and I figured it out, like you, by the help of the wonderful men and women on these boards.  I would check with the bfding board as to how you can replenish your supply best.  I went thru similar scenarios of trying formulas and weaning.  I was able to up my production each time by feeding every 2hr for the first 24hr.  In the US Nutramigin and Alimentum are hypos that we can get w/o prescription.  However, b/c they are truly hypo-allergenic I seem to recall the UK requires a prescription.  Somebody else will have to answer that one.  A last note about hypos - most babies do wonderfully on them.  A small percentage (in the single digits according to my ped.) can't even take the broken down proteins of the soy and dairy that comprises these hypos.  So, cleaning up your diet of soy and dairy is a first line of defense.  It's not impossible.  Read all labels.  Casein, whey and dairy and soy and anything that has the word "soy" should be eliminated.  You may be able to slowly introduce whey and soy lecithin back in your diet later.  I agree w. Kelly about cutting back on the foods for your LO.  My DS had an 'immature gut' and really couldn't tolerate solids until yams at 8m.  Pears were too harsh.  As a note: some jarred foods have sorbitol or asorbic acid which doesn't make refluxers happy.  Also, cut out grains that may be harsh.  We couldn't do oats until closer to 11m.  Karen aka "marisa's mama" was invaluable on first foods.  You may be able to search some of her posts as long ago as 18m. that are of interest regarding 'immature gut.'  Our safe, gentle first foods at 8m went as follows: yams, prunes, peaches, lamb.  I know that's a bunch of info that I have tossed out.  Take in what may resonate with your specific situation.  I know this is a frustrating situation.  You just want your LO to be rested and comfortable.  Hugs! Love, Ashley

Thanks guys for the advice. I really needed a hug yesterday. So far so good on the milk supply but I'm going to have to do a shopping trip because even the lentils in our cupboard aren't suitable.... I live in the UK so I guess I'm going to have to wait on the formula.  Butternut squash seems to agree with L so I might stll give her that.

I am afraid that hypoallergenic formula is only available on prescription in the UK. I would definately push the pharmacist for a prescription if you want to use formula either to supplement, to have incase milk supply is down or if you find it difficult sticking to the elimination diet.
