BF Strawberry allergy?
« on: April 15, 2008, 10:30:02 am »
Hi, I'm new here so hope I'm posting in the correct place! :)
I am EBFing my DD, she's now 3mths old. My query is that when she as 6-7weeks old, she started having a few spots on her face which within the week covered her face and head. The paediatrician eased my HUGE concern that she was allergic to my milk (my sister was to our Mum's milk) and told me it wasn't eczema (phew, again) and gave me a cream. This actually aggrevated her skin and she started rubbing her face with her fists and on anything she was near to (even in her sleep). So I stopped the cream and covered her face with good old Sudacrem. 2days later the spots had gone. Paediatrician said she didn't know what it was. As I was BFing I was careful to add only one new food every few days (just to see if anything bothered her). At this time I ate strawberries a few times and haven't since (and she's been spot-free since - maybe a coincidence?). Has anyone else had a strawberry reaction passed through breastmilk as my Paediatrician says it can't be. Would love to eat strawberries again but not at the risk of upsetting my DD's skin. :-\

I would say that anything is possible when it comes to allergies. I know my son reacted to foods through my breastmilk even though I was told by his health visitor that it was very unlikely. The only way to know for sure wouldbe to try eating strawberries again with no other changes in your diet. If your dd reacts again then you will know for sure it was the strawberries, if not then you can enjoy eating them again. At this point you have to decide if you want to trial them.

I would say it is certainly possible. We know that certain foods do 'enter the milk' in some form and in rare cases this can cause allergies in babies. There are plenty of mothers out there who are breastfeeding and themselves on an elimination diet so their baby avoids dairy proteins/ wheat and gluten/ eggs.
I don't understand what the paed is saying. That the food won't affect your milk? It would be unusual especially if you have no family history but not impossible.

Yeah, I don't get that either.  Everything that enters your body can pass in some form in your breast milk.

Personally, I would avoid strawberries for some time and try them again in a month or so.

It could be that she has a very bad strawberry allergy and the little bit that she got through your milk affected her.

Could be the strawberries, but it is hard to know unless you had the same reaction twice or more.  Who knows?  Could of been the perfume that someone who held her was wearing, or something else out of your control like that!  If you think it was the strawberries, I'd avoid them, but she may also be okay now that she is a bit older.  Just do whatever your momma instincts tell you to do!

Thanks guys for your feedback. I definately believe in 'some' instances Mum's instinctively know more than the medical books!!
I have not tried strawberries again yet and will leave it until either she's bigger or even later when she's on solids (but very carefully is, as Wendy suggested maybe she has a strong reaction if she has 'pure' strawberry). Also I had not eaten whole eggs (only in small amounts as a cooking ingredient) as this also coincided with another outbreak of spots. I tried an omelette the other day, and there were the spots again! Looks like she can't tolerate eggs in large amounts ... luckily for me, small amounts don't affect her, so I can still eat cake!!!! LOL :) Again, Sudacrem took out the irritation and they are not red and itchy anymore.
I was wondering what the general opinion is regarding intolerances - do you keep giving little amounts in order to build up her resistance slowly, or would this make the problem get more sensitive and is best to steer clear of any trigger foods.
