Is my 9 week old to young for 3.5hour easy?
« on: April 17, 2008, 16:35:06 pm »
Hi All - This is my first post but i've read alot of advice that has helped me with my DS!

My query now is that a few weeks back at night he would sleep consistantly from around 10pm until 6am sometimes even 7am and then I would wake him to start his day at 9am.  Until recently....He has now started waking around 2am and then 5am and then ready to start his day at 8am?!?  I try to get him back to sleep in his night wakings with his dummy which worked about a week ago but now he just spits it out so I assume that he is hungry.  I do leave him a little while to see if he will resettle but he wont.  When he woke up this morning at 8am.  As soon as I got him out of his crib, he stopped crying and just sat smiling away (didn't seem hungry at all?)!  He was born 8lbs 12ozs and last time he was weighed he was nearly 14lbs so he is a big boy but often only comfortably eats a little over 4 ozs every 3 hours?  Is he ready for a 3 and a half hour routine?  This is his current routine

E 9am
A Until 10.30
S 10.30

E 12pm
A Until 1.30 (sometimes he can go longer at this time of day by about 15 mins)
S 1.30

E 3pm
A Until 4.30
S 4.30

E 6pm
A Until 7.30
S 7.30 (He sometimes doesnt' sleep at this nap and can last until his bed time)

E 8pm
A Bath, massage, bottle etc..
S 9.30pm goes off before 10pm

Does anyone have any advice to get him back to sleeping 7hours straight??  He is a big baby and can do it and who has done it before but i'm not sure why this has happened?
Also, he has started rolling over but the wakes started before this and have been going on for about 2 weeks!

Thanks for your advice in advance!! ;)

Could he be going through a growth spurt?

**When he wakes is he crying...the 'mommy I need you cry'?

Most lo's eventually end up picking up a start time of their day.
We always has her up at 7, but a few months went by and she was really a 6am baby and has been that way ever since, no matter what time she goes to bed.

Your lo may just be regulating his body and his routine.

Does the 10pm bedtime work for you?
If your lo is waking up at 8am, I would shoot for an 8pm bedtime.  You want to aim for a 12 hour day and 12 hour night.
Then 10:30/11pm DF
After that your lo will most likely wake once.
At 9 weeks 2-3 feeds at night can be normal.

You are doing a great job.

Thank you so much for your reply!

I do have a query now as over the course of a few days i noticed my ds was staying awake longer and eating less at his 3 hour feed so i decided to jump straight into a 3.5 hour easy.  It seems to be going well but i read today that babies can't handle 2 hour a time unitl 4-5 months!  He has coped with it well and goes to sleep as soon as i put him down and sleeps the full 1.5hours for his nap - the only thing i have noticed is that he seems quieter than usual?  do you think that is because he is OT?
Our routine

E 8.30
A 2 hours
S 10.30

E 12.00
A 2 hours
S 2pm

E 3.30
A 2 hours
S 5.30

E 6.30
A Bath, massage and bottle
S 8.30

should i go back to 3 hour easy?  Like i said, he seems ok (sometimes a little quieter) but sleeping really well? Also, i've gone back to 1 night waking now?

Thanks

If you think your lo is ready and things continue to go well, then I would stick with it. :)
In a few days if you notice your lo started to take short naps and having more NWings than normal, etc. then you'll know something is not right with the routine, but give it 3-5 days before deciding.

Sounds like things are well.
