18mo old transistion from bottle to sippy cup
« on: April 22, 2008, 21:59:11 pm »
My daughter is now 18mo old and we are having difficulty switching her milk from bottle to sippy cup.  She took water in a sippy cup around 6/7mo old no problem.  She drinks fruit smoothies from a different cup than water (mostly b/c it will flow through it easier than her water cup with a straw)  She will drink from a cup and straw when we're out at a restaurant.
She transitioned from her formula to milk just fine, but now won't take the milk in anything but her bottle.  She was getting a bottle in the morning upon waking (6oz), then about 5oz sometime in the afternoon then another 8oz before going to bed.  Last Tuesday (a week ago) I cut it out and just the 8oz at bedtime...I have offered it in 4 different cups, a regular cup with and without a straw and no go!!  She is also wanting her soother all day now, she was at the point that she only used it at nap and bedtimes...if we asked for it (if she had it during the day) she'd just hand it over, now she bites down on it for the life of her!!
I'm at a loss of what we should/shouldn't be doing??  We were at the Dr.'s last week for her 18mo check up and he said to keep in up...anyone have any other suggestions??

Thanks, Pam

I think you should just keep offering the cup at bedtime.  Offer it in her chair downstairs/not in the bedroom so she doesn't associate it as much as a comforting occasion, more of a bedtime snack.  Don't stress though, it's not going to hurt her that she's still getting one bottle a day.  Don't make it a battle, eventually she'll want to be a "big girl" and she'll drink from a cup.  The more you force the issue, the more she's going to fight it, KWIM?

Thanks for your reply...I re-read mine and just wanted to clarify something about it...since last week I have offered milk in different sippy cups throughout the day and giving 8oz of milk in her bottle only at night...she drinks the night bottle only, she pushes away the daytime offerings 90% of the time, she has had a few sips.  So were you saying to give her the bottle at night only, offering it in the living room and not in her bedroom and then offer it in the sippy cups throughout the day? I can stick with that...I'm hoping the pacifier thing will loosen up in the next week or so..I will try to distract her during the day and have her without it.
Just wanted to clarify.
THanks, Pam

Does she have other sources of calcium?  If so, I just wouldn't stress out about the milk thing.  Keep offering the sippy.  I've found with my dd that if someone else is drinking from a cup, it's a sure way to get her interested in that cup.  If her sister has a sippy, she'll steal it!  LOL
So, maybe you could try pretending that the cup is yours and see if that increases her interest.  The other thing I did with Meghan is teach her to do "cheers" and clink our cups together than we both drink from our cups.  It's pretty funny actually!!

Thanks for your suggestions!!  Much appreciated...I was going to look into a suppliment for her as a possiblilty at the health food store.  She took a few sips this evening..so maybe this is the start??  We'll see!!  She does eat cheese fairly regularly in grilled cheese and macaroni and cheese...she's not a fan of just cheese by itself yet...
Anyway...thanks for your suggestions!!

My 19 mo just started drinking her milk from a sippy finally, I have been for awhile slitting the nipple of her bottle so it flowed faster for a while and would offer sippy of milk every so often but she would just push it away. I actually got her or rather my husband did( he isn't usually here to give the bed time bottles) it was a worn sippy that let the milk out a little faster, so not sure if it was that particular cup or  maybe have someone else if possible give her a sippy of milk. They can be so stubborn sometimes!
