How much milk after 12 months?
« on: May 15, 2008, 15:10:56 pm »
Hello, just a quick question.  What is the recommended amount of milk for a 12 month old?  My boys are 11 months and we just dropped a bottle and are now at 3 bottles per day.  They are currently on 18oz/day but they are showing much more interest in foods lately and I'm assuming their milk consumption will continue to go down, especially once we switch over to whole milk next month.

Thanks,
Lindsay

Pint of dairy 12-24 months, so it'll depend on how much dairy the boys are having in their solid diet (yogurt, cheese, milky sauces, puddings etc) as to how much milk you give them to drink :)

How much is a pint?  On the same note, how heavy is a stone?

Ah...!

A pint is 20floz = 570ml

A stone is 14lb (pounds) = 6.35kg

We Brits just can't let go of those old imperial measurements however much the EU wants us too ;D

Ax - One more question...we're back to 4 bottles a day because the boys get a bottle after they wake and they were missing that bottle after their pm nap.  We'll drop back down to 3 bottles/day when they go down to one nap.  However, they seem to be milk hogs!  ;)  They are easily finishing 16 oz. formula + 8 oz. whole milk (4 - 6oz bottles/day), 4 oz. yogurt, plus some days they have an oz or two of cheese.  So that's a minimum of 28oz/day dairy.  And they would probably drink another couple of oz if I offered it!  I've read a few places that getting TOO MUCH dairy can actually cause babies to not get enough of the nutrition they need from other solids at this age.  Should I think about cutting back on the bottles?  Maybe from 6oz to 5?

At the 12 month(ish) mark, I think what they are having is still fine - is it interfering with the amount of solid foods they are eating, ie. are they disinterested in food?

Dd2 had 2x bf and 2x 6oz bottle until 17 months, then I dropped the morning bf, and then replaced the bedtime bf with another 6oz bottle at 18 months, it wasn't until 22 months that I reduced her mid-morning and mid-afternoon bottles to 4oz each to encourage her to have some fruit after her milk!

You might have to fiddle about with it, try reducing the milk to 5oz per bottle and see if it increases solid food intake, just try to keep it at a minimum of 20oz in total, and offer a wide selection of other foods throughout the day - is all a question of trial and error to balance it :)

It doesn't seem to be interfering with their solid food intake so I'll just keep an eye on it and see how it goes.  I'll also consult with our ped at our 1 year appt.  Thanks for the help!
