6 month old, what sleep?
« on: May 24, 2008, 05:30:09 am »
My daughter is 6 months old in a few days and I was just wondering how much sleep she should be having during the day.

She's been on a (sort of!) 4 hr EASY for a month or 2 now and it's been working great especially as she now doesn't have any props and settles herself to sleep very easily every time now, which I'm obviously pleased with after 10+ NW's for a dummy.

Anyway, she's started to wake at around 2am but I think this is because she's teething very badly and will generally go back to sleep when I rub some gel on her gums. And also she's been waking at 5.30am, but seems to want feeding this time, which I do then she'll go back til around 7.30am, which obviously throw's our EASY out for the rest of the day because the she gets fed before her nap, which isn't so much of a problem as I make sure there's some activity between the bottle and nap so she doesn't start associating it with sleep.

So my question really, is how much sleep should she be having? She's never really had the late afternoon catnap as she's never seem to needed it.

For her morning nap she'll have between 2-2.15hrs then her afternoon nap she'll have 1.5-2hrs, with up to 3hrs A time in between the morning and afternoon one, which is usually when we are out and about so she will powernap in the car/pram if she needs to.

Is this too much/too little sleep? I just want to ascertain that the NW & EW are down to what I think they are and not because of other reasons, if that makes sense!

Thanks
xx

if it works for you then It hink it is fine.

how does the night waking throw off your EASY?  why would that cause you to feed before the nap and not at wake up time?

Well she usually needs feeding at 5.30 if she wakes up and won't go back to sleep unless I give it to her, when I can just pop her back in her cot and she'll go to sleep by herself. But if she feeds at 5.30 and goes back to sleep until 7.30, then her next feed is 9.30 just as she's going back down for a sleep...and this'll carry on for the rest of the day!

When my DS was still feeding in the middle of the night I didn't count it for the 4 hour EASY.  If he woke at 5 for a feed I would feed him again when he woke up for the day regardless, the 4 hours EASY would then start from there.  I know sometimes he wasn't as hungry but he took enough to last till the next feed.  Also, DS was sleeping around 4hours 45min at 6 months and is now at 4 hours because he dropped the 45 min catnap :)

I agree with PP just feed the at wake up time because then when the night feeds disapear you will be able to just have it established that you feed when you wake in the morning.
