10 month old does not seem to be swallowing foods
« on: May 27, 2008, 14:06:46 pm »
Hi ladies

dd2 is 10 months old - up until about a month ago she was wolfing her food down from the spoon as well as finger foods and sleeping 12 hours solid at night.

A month ago she started to reject the spoon (which I know is very common at this age) so we just finger fed her instead which she's fine with.  The problem is I'm not convinced that she's swallowing the food.  She sucks and knaws on her food but when she has a mouthful once she's sucked the juicy stuff out of it she seems to be spitting the rest of it out.  For example today she has scrambled egg on toast she sucked down the egg as best she could then mushed up the toast in her mouth but instead of swallowing it she spat it out.

This alone would not really concern me, we had similar feeding issues with dd1 at this age, what does concern me though is that she had very bad reflux for which she is still on medication and I'm worried that her oesophagus may be damaged in someway - she makes a low moaning sound when she is trying to eat PLUS the fact that she can drink about 20oz of juice no problem with each meal (if I don't give it to her she gets very upset and willnot eat any further).

My hv does not seem unduly concerned (do they ever?) but told me to take her to the doctors.  The thing is I just KNOW what dr will say at this stage ie. it's normal for babies to be fussy, don't worry because her weight hasn't dropped etc but I just feel this is more than fussiness.

I'm posting really to see if anyone else has had a similar experience to this - it's driving me ever so slightly mad and I'd really appreciate some input.

Thanks you ladies

Could the 20 oz of juice not make her hungry enough for food?  How much baby milk is she getting?

Yep I know it sounds a lot but believe me without it she will not eat - it is as if she needs it to help her eat or lubricate her throat.

Until all this started she was on 2 to 3 milk feeds a day and sleeping through.  Now she is having around 4 bottles of milk a day.

BTW when she comes to eat there has been a gap of 3 3.5 hours since her last milk feed/snack so she is pretty hungry.  I don;t think the juice has anything to do with it - although I knew people would think it did!

I do remember that dd (silent refluxer) prefered watery/slippery food for a while at around 14/15 mos.  Could you try something like that?  Maybe some soup with bits of food?  Fo the longest of time, all dd ate was noodle soup with bits of veggies and meat.  She just basically slurped the soup down.  In the meantime, it would hurt to see her dr.

she's going to the dr's tomorrow

she won't take the spoon so I can't get her to have anything watery/slippery - although I do keep trying her with it

I used a cup to feed dd the soup.  The soup is basically clear chicken broth with short egg noodles and bits of chicken and veggies cut julianne.

Haven't really got any words of wisdom but just wanted to let you know that I hope everything goes well at the docs tomorrow and you get some answers.
