really need food ideas for 7mo old
« on: May 29, 2008, 15:17:52 pm »
I really need some food ideas. Turns out feeding isn't as straight forward as it was with my first dd.
Erika likes certain jar foods but they are all the ones that contribute to her current constipation problem.

I know one person mentioned avocado.... does anyone else have some ideas of things i can feed her...either soft finger foods (only  has 2 teeth) or things I can mash up myself?
so far a few things i've tried are:
toast
cucumber
tomato
banana (but not good for constipation)...

other jarred foods..but she doesn't like the ones that would help with the constipation....

help!:) thanks:)

Any very ripe fruit should help, mashed or cut up into finger food.  Pears, cantaloupe, peaches, mango.  And you may try foods she doesn't like in jars as finger food.  My son hates all pureed veggies but will eat some of them as finger foods- go figure!  Good luck.  Solid feeding is definitely harder than I thought, too!

Steamed veggies are good as finger foods, or lightly roasted. Butternut squash, sweet potatoes are great roasted (ds LOVES them) and steamed broccoli  :)

LOL a boogie beebies song!

Nicole, we do pretty much anything and everything.  Callie has no teeth.  She eats everything off her tray by herself - we don't do any spoons.

Toasties (grilled sandwiches), pittas toasted and cold, tuna, cheese tomato as fillings, toast with butter or cheese spread, long strips of cheese, roast/steamed veg strips, fruit strips that Callie can hold herself, homemade pizzas (pitta, homemade tomato sauce and then cheese), eggy bread, crumpets, spag bol tonight :), cucumber, cheese sauce over steamed veg, mac cheese, rice cakes ....

seriously? I didn't think I was supposed to give her: cheese, tuna yet...can I?
and I know certain berries like Strawberries....I was under the understanding that dairy and fish could cause allergies if given too soon...
someone correct me if i'm wrong.. b/c she LOVES dairy and i'm sure would eat it if I let her.
also....how does she break down the strips of cheese nicola?????? and Pita??

in my baby food book for 7 months it has

butternut squash
zucchini
Acorn squash
Yellow Squash
Babked potato
prune
stewed plums
peach
peachy plum
peach banana
necturines

then the months before this has
green peas
sweet potato
sweet potato and banana
pear
apple

yogurt is at 9 months and other cheeses at 10 months.

you could experiment with these cooked softly int he microwave and in small chunchs if she perfers finger foods.

There are all kinds of different guidelines out there for what to feed when. The guidelines I used were yogurt at 7 mo and cheese after 8 mo, as long as there are no concerns about potential dairy sensitivities. For cheese, I cut string cheese into quarters lengthwise and then sliced for #1. We did more BLW with #2 and I'd quarter it lengthwise and give her the whole strip. She was able to gum off a bit and safely eat it. Same with pita, toast strips, waffles, pancakes...I'd give her the whole thing and she'd nibble at it.

Broccoli would help with constipation, but it's usually not recommended until babies are a bit older. It tends to be difficult to digest and can cause major gas.

The other Melissa gave a great list. We did a lot of those at that age. I'd either serve them super ripe or steamed and in strips or wedges for Mackenzie to gnaw on.

There is a FAQ about the UK guidelines on what can be offered and when :) basically anything without any additives that isn't honey can be given from 6 months! You just have to exercise caution and be sensible :)

C will pretty much eat anything and everything!!

Banana's are supposed to be good for both constipation and loose bowels. I read it somewhere but can't remember where, sorry!!

I'm assuming you are in the early days of weaning?? Here's a few that I have in the freezer ready for C:

Carrot and parsnip
Carrot and potato - C loves this!!
Butternut squash
Sweet potato
Cheese and onion pie - basically, grated cheese mixed with mash potato and a wee bit of boiled onion.
Baby bolognese - bit of lean mince, plum tomatoes and onion blended and some spaghetti chopped up small and mixed in.
Mince and mash - with a wee bit of low salt gravy and blended them mixed with mash.
Lentil 'soup' - carrot, lentils, parsnip all whizzed together to make a thick 'soup'.

Potatoes don't blend well - go like glue so I just mash them with a bit of unsalted butter and milk until creamy. C has had smooth yoghurt, fromage frais, ready brek, stewed apple etc.

Best thing to do, I've found is just to try something. If LO doesn't like it, leave it for a few days or so and then try it again. C has had some very wierd and wonderful concoctions and enjoyed them more than the more run of the mill. Root veg is usually good as it is naturally sweet and if you lightly steam, then they can be used as finger foods too!

Good luck and enjoy!!

Nicole,

Cheese ... we do a strip that she can hold in her fist.  About the thickness of a cheese cube but longer, kwim?

Tuna ... in pitta or in toastie

Pitta ... fill with cheese, humous, tuna and then I cut into strips so that they stick out of the top of her fist.  Put homemade tomato sauce and grated cheese on top then cut into thick strips.

Crumpets/Toast/Pancakes... thick strips

Peach slices ... whole

Veg ... cut into thick 'chip like' strips and either steamed or roasted.

I have put a Callie and BLW thread in photo gallery ... have a look there for sizes

Great link here Nicole....its all about waiting for your baby to decide when he is ready to wean, and give him full control, i.e no purees, just finger foods from the word go.
