first A time has to be so short can't get on 4 hour EASY
« on: May 30, 2008, 17:18:50 pm »
Ok, everythign is a mess with C right now.  He's almost 4 months.  30-45 min naps are pretty much the norm these days.  But he wasn't eating well either, so I know it's time for 4 hour EASY with eating, but he can't seem to extend his naps.  I *think* that this is our main problem...
For the first A time of the day, he's just still so tired from the night that there's no way I can keep him up even 1.5 hours is pushing it.  I just can't seem to get that first one right.  I think honestly, when he wakes at 6:30 or 7, he's waking cuz he's hungry and if I treated it like a middle of the night feed, he'd just go right back to sleep.  Problem is his diaper is usually about to leak (often does if he poos during the feed) and he has been sleeping 12 hours so it seems like he should get up.

Everythign is just so difficult with him and I just don't know which problem to tackle first, but I think if he would have that first cycle worked out, the rest would fall into place.

Generally the rest of the day, if he's well rested, he can handle 1 h 45 mins A time and I can stretch it to 2 hours by having the last 15 mins wiht a longer wind down (usually he just wants to go to his room and quickly get down in his bed.

Does anyone have any ideas for this?

Sorry, I have no idea what forum to put this.  It seems like a short nap problem, but who knows!

Sounds like he's OT with that length of naps.  What time do you put him down after he wakes for the day?  Could you post your routine and we'll take a look?

Well our routine is so off because of naps and all...
So let's say he gets up at 7am.  Often by 8:10 he's really tired.  But the thing is that at other times of the day he doesn't start showing signs of tiredness until 1.5 hours or much later, and can seem to go 1.75 or 2 hours no problem.  The other problem I have is that I have to nurse him straightaway when he wakes or he will not eat!  So if he wakes at 6:40, I really have to nurse him then and start the day or I can't get him to eat if he's really awake.

Generally, I'm aiming for E at 7, 11, 3, 7 and DF at 11, but lately I've been gettign another feed in there because he's doing more of a 3.5 just because his naps are so messed up and I have to feed him when he's getting up and I can't stretch it any longer.  So ideally I'd like the naps to be 1.75 hours after each E, with a little catnap around 5.

Hope that all makes sense.

LOs his age can handle 1.75-2 hrs A time if they are well rested.  So let's say he gets up at 7, and you put him down 1.25 hrs after he gets up (that would be pretty normal because usually that first A time is the shortest of the day anyways at this age).  Then don't stretch his A time to 2 hrs after that.  Keep it at 1.75, and then hopefully those short naps would disappear.  It sounds like he's OT from the length of his naps, and really you should have shorter A time following a short nap.  And a 3.5 hr EASY is perfectly appropriate for his age.

Sorry, I'm not wording this very well... my DD2 is going through swaddling 'detox' and I'm dealing with NWs and EWs.  Hopefully my sleep-deprived mind is making sense. :)
