Wnat to FF but give dd gas pains
« on: June 02, 2008, 19:26:42 pm »
Hi - I'm wondering if someone has had the same issue.  My dd is 12 weeks old and I have been breastfeeding.  Now, I want to start formula (for several reasons that I won't go into).  I am starting with the 1pm feed and using formula.  The problem is that it gives my dd really bad gas pains.  Today, she cried for 20 minutes.  I know it isn't from the bottle b/c I have given her EBM for weeks in a bottle and didn't have a problem.  I first tried Similac Advance.  The last 2 days I tried Enfamil Lipil.  I actually think the Enfamil is worse.

Does her system just need to get used to the formula?  Or should I try a different brand of formula (maybe Nestle Good Start)?

Thanks.

In case anyone else has this problem, I thought I would pass on some info I found.

I talked to a few different people and my pediatrician and they all recommended Nestle Good Start.  It has 'comfort proteins' which are partially broken down and easier to digest.

when we switched to formula it really constipated my LO.  i searched out the lowest iron one i could find and it helped to not constipate her so much.  i was using the liquid concentrate low iron similac.

Hi! Our twins had problems with gas. Unfortunately, no matter what formula we used, they still had some gas. First we tried Gentle Ease, the lacto free. We evntually ended up on Enfamil Prosobee (soy). It has helped the most, but I also think it has to do with their age as well (6 mo.). The premixed helped also. All the formulas I've mentioned have partially broken down proteins, so they are easir to digest. One other thing...do you mix your formula by stirring or shaking it? All the little bubbles formed when shaking the bottle end up in the baby's stomach. I was shaking until my ped suggested stirring, and yes, that helped too!

As for constipation, Similac constipated our boys. We switched to Enfamil and poopy!!!  ;D It's so funny what parents get excited over.

I had a longer post about helping with gas when switching to formula...under wind, wind and more wind...

Good luck! Nothing breaks your heart mpre than your lo in pain.

Thanks for the response.  I do shake the bottle to mix it so I will try stirring now.  Also, I tried looking for your other post and couldn't find it.  What section did you post it in?

I tried looking for it as well. When I find it, I'll post a link for you. I think it was under Feeding Solids  ???

Hello! I found it! It may have some good suggestions for you to try for your lo. The things I did alleviated the gas, but didn't get rid of it. Only time will truly help the most, when their little systems can digest the formula  :-\

I hop this helps!
