RE: Switching formulas when supplementing
« on: June 12, 2008, 15:38:37 pm »
Hi!  This may be a dumb question (I know, I know, there's no such thing as a dumb question...) but just wondering if it's ok to switch up formulas when I'm only supplementing a bit with it.  Right now DS is 5 months old and gets about 3oz of formula mixed with 3 oz of ebm for the df.  I am slowly adding 1 oz of formula at a time until that feed is exclusively formula but he'll remain bf beyond that.  With DS1 I did the same but only used Nestle.  With #2, I've received a few cans of Enfamil free and have been using Nestle to start so I wouldn't mind using the Enfamil when the Nestle is done.... I will use Nestle again when that's gone, though.....thoughts?

Every formula is different and it can sometimes be hard on their stomachs to keep switching formula.  We did have to switch formulas with our ds when he was small to find the right one, but that was because he was a very gassy baby, but personally I would not go back and forth between two brands.  We did try to do that with our son's lactose free brands and he went on a feeding strike because the two brands tasted so different.

If you want to do it you can, just try to do it slowly, slowly increase the amount of the new formula.

I resently switched the formula we supliment with the same way.

Because its such a small amount its easier to do then if he was only getting Formula.

Thanks for the advice thus far.  I may use one of them as long as it's just in small amounts.  I actually received yet another full sized tin in the mail today (no idea why I'm getting all of them) so I'm going to see if any of my friends use one of the brands or else donate one to the food bank.
