Finger food help
« on: June 16, 2008, 14:17:08 pm »
My DS#2 seems to react badly to cheeses, which he loves, so I am looking for other finger food ideas.  He is 8 1/2 months - eats cheerios, bagels, fruits......any other ideas?

I basically feed ds what we eat.  I jsut makes sure that what I offer him is more tender or I just cut it into bite-size pieces.

Some things that ds likes are:

broccoli
snow peas
baby corn
cucumbers
beans
pancakes
blueberries
chicken, pork
egg yolk
noodles
pasta

I'm more relaxed this time about what to offer to ds.  If he can eat it and has no bad reaction then I will let him have it.  The only things I avoid now are nuts (esp. peanuts) and honey.

Thanks, I will try that.  Hey - do you "par boil" - I read that that is what you should do with things like carrots and I'm not sure how to?

I don't know what "par boil" is but ds and dd would eat the carrots that are part of the stir fry dish.  They don't like steam carrots for some reason.  Bland food (just steamed) doesn't go really well in this house.

I have heard that if you puree carrots then you shouldn't use the water that it was cooked in b/c of the nitrates.  Could that be it?

Not sure - I think it's "partially boiling" so as to make the stuff softer, but I'mnot sure how long.  :(

Yes thats what par boiling is but tbh its better to steam....preserves more of the nutrients. Usually only needs a few mins depending on the veg. We roast a lot too, seems to prefer that.

My lo is a day older than yours and we're doing baby-led weaning, so no purees, fingers foods form the start. So far he has:

Roasted/steamed sweet potato, carrot & butternut squash
Steamed broccoli & courgette
Sweetcorn
Gluten/wheat free pasta
Nectarines
Grapes
Cucumber
Banana
Kiwi
Organix sweetcorn crunchy rings and carrot sticks, plus baby rice cakes
Organix soft rusks
Avocado
yoghurt
bread (gluten/wheat free)
tuna

He's only been eating for a month so thats it so far, but introducing new stuff all the time!
