Cooking with wine harmful to toddlers?
« on: June 18, 2008, 00:51:40 am »
Hi~
I just realized after my toddler gobbled up her dinner last night that I had in actual fact used a 1/2 cup of red wine in the recipe! I had an immediate freak out and watched for the stumbles and slurred speech (I partially jest) and was wondering, is this okay?  To my knowledge the alcohol in recipes gets boiled away and thus leaves no reminents; however, if this is not the case, please let me know.  I don't want my toddler pouring herself any nightcaps anytime soon!
thanks.

I think it is absolutely fine and that the alcohol does boil off/cook off.  My dd takes sips of my dh's beer and has never had any ill effects, so I wouldn't worry about the wine in the meal.  I don't approve of her drinking the beer, but my dh thinks it is harmless (he's a doctor).  HTH

I think I gave my girl a buzz inadvertently one night.  I was drinking wine and she was fussy in the restaurant so I let her sit on my lap.  Somehow we got into a game where I would blow on her, can't remember exactly how or what it was but I kept at it while our dinner mates finished their meals.  By the time we were done, her cheeks were rosy and she was VERY giggly.  I got really freaked out and checked her a hundred times that night.  But other than a really, really good rest she was fine.

We use wine from time to time in recipes and I just make sure it boils really well.  The alcohol will evaporate pretty quickly (like 30 seconds or something) from what I understand.

My Dr said there shouldn't be a problem, most of the alcohol cooks off.

phew..okay feel much better...and your stories are hilarious!  I have noticed that my toddler LOVES to dip her hands in our nightly cocktails and suck on her fingers!  It gives me a snap shot memory of when I used to sneak sips at my mum and dad's parties!  It's all about growing up i guess!
thanks for your responses

I would have written exactly what Melissa said :)

(except that, sadly, my dh is not a doctor ;))

Okay, I'll confess to dipping DD's paci in a bit of wine.  I was SO SURE that she wouldn't like the taste of it and figured once she tasted it, she'd quit pestering us for some.  Nope, she tasted it and said, "mmmmm".  Oh no!  We're in trouble now!

LOL Caroline!

And yes, I also thought my dd wouldn't like wine or beer, but she does which is incredible as she doesn't like hamburgers for example.  So no burgers, but she'll take a Guiness.  Unbelievable.
