LO won't sit still to feed from bottle, advice needed!
« on: June 26, 2008, 01:13:23 am »
My DD is just over 9 months old and we recently started to transition from breast to bottle.  For the last 6 days now I have only given her a bottle at her early afternoon feed and she is managing to take 4-5 ounces which I think is pretty good (although I really have no idea!).  Trouble is it is taking a LOOOONG time to get that amount into her tummy and I am having great difficulty figuring out how to keep her still and interested in feeding.  My first instinct was to sit quietly in our usual chair in her room, lay her down on a pillow on my lap just like we do when I breastfeed her but instead give her the bottle.  This kind of worked for the first day, mind you she was clearly anticipating getting milk from me as she kept turning towards my body ...which made it brutally difficult to not cave in and just feed her myself. :'(   So the next day I tried putting her in a totally different environment to see it that would help but it didn't really change things.  Now we end up shifting around the house into different locations and positions plus try to distract her with toys, etc. in an attempt to get her to feed without wriggling and fussing for an hour.  I am trying to be patient as I know it is really different for her but surely there must be a way to help her sit and drink without fidgeting and squirming and in a reasonable amount of time!  Does anyone happen to have any suggestions for us?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  THANKS!!

Sounds exactly like my DD.  She has been purely bottle fed since day one, and has recently started doing the same thing.

I find that I have to keep her entertained, and give her toys to hold / bang against the bottle.  Yes it is time consuming, but I figure she will grow out of it.  I hope  :-\

As they get older there is just so many more exciting things to do besides eat.  I generally try sitting DD in her boucy chair, she usually looks at the television while I am feeding her.  This keeps her entertained for a bit.

Sorry I am not much help, but wanted to let you know you are not alone  :-*

I am finding the same, I have to entertain her which can be tricky as she gets bored with toys fairly quickly.  Perhaps I will try the tv tomorrow.  Fingers crossed it is just a phase!
It is reassuring to know we are not the only ones with this little issue, thank you!   :)

Hiya we moved from breast to bottle around 5 months and are having a bit of the same.  DD is 8 months old now.

Are you using a fast flow teat?  I know they say to use slow flows ones for bf babies but at this age she prob needs a fast flow one.   Just a thought ... as an hour seems like a long time for her to take 4/5 oz at this age.

Callie sits on my knee, back to my chest looking at everything! Turns her head around everytime big sis runs past, bird flies past window and so on and so on! I just try to move bottle quickly with her

Same problem here especially after 4 oz.  I sing and make silly noises.

Yes, we are using a fast flow teat...good thought though!  I think it is taking so long no only because she is a fidget bottom but she isn't really sucking, seems more like chewing on the teat.  Not sure how to get her to latch on properly...anyone have any thoughts?

Is she teething?  That could also be part of the problem.

If you suspect that she may be teething, you may want to try and rub a bit of teething gel on her gums a few mins before a feed to see if that makes her feeds any easier.
