Returning BW...doubting efforts with nap
« on: June 26, 2008, 14:43:33 pm »
I'm a returning bw... I have a 21/2 year old who I bw and swore by it...  :)
I know have a 3 month old.  I have taught him to fall asleep independently.  He can occasionally have a 2 hour nap on his own, but most recently cannot stay asleep past 45 min.  I remember the same with my ds1 but am struggling with ds2.  Will he eventually just start napping longer or do I have to continue patting... and helping him continue?  I usually wait until he cries for me, then go in; it usually takes anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes to get him back to sleep.  He's on a 3 1/2 hour EASY.  We were doing a 3 nap and catnap (or should I say 4 to 6 catnaps) a day, tried to do a 2 nap plus catnap (worked for 3 days) then he woke up really early next day...back to 3 + 1....   He is almost 16 pounds and can usually go 31/2 to 4 hours between feeds.  Great sleeper at night...has never been affected - wakes up around 3:30-4:30 for a nf.  I df around 10:45pm
I seem to be doubting, because I've tried many things...waiting for the jolt, w2s, pat/shh...roon is dark, fan on, music, try not to ot or ut, he is swaddled with hand out (he started to suck fingers).... I've held him 15 min before bed to transition, do a proper winddown, goes down awake without trouble, but then wakes at 45 crying.
I can usuallyget him back with patting, paci but often I think he just wears himself out.

Is it developmental??? Do I continue or just let him be?  As I mentioned I've gone through the techniques with my ds1, but I feel like it just may be time that will help him?

How would I do W2s with a 3 month old for naps?

Thanks  ???    Just frustrated and unsure of what I'm doing with him?!
Alex  :)

Welcome back!!  Congrats on your new LO!  I would say that if you have tried all the ways to extend naps and it hasn't happened, give yourself a break.  He WILL grow out of it and it is more important when you have 2 to not spend all of your time frustrated and in #2's room trying to get him back to sleep. As long as he's not cranky and the short naps aren't leading to NW's, I say let it be.  As I reread your post, I didn't see where you mention increasing A time to try and get rid of those pesky 45 minute naps.  Have you tried that yet?

Hi Thanks for your reply...  I have started trying lengthening his A time, will let you know.  Is it instant? Should I try in 15 min increments?

It probably won't be an instantaeous change, but give it 3 days and if nothing changes, there is probably not much else you can do.  I would try 10 -15 minute increments depending on your LO's personality - touchy babies tend to have a harder time so I'd try 5 minutes, but most others should be able to handle it.
