Anyone using Breastflow bottles? Need help as stopping BF
« on: July 01, 2008, 13:15:56 pm »
Hi all

I just wondered if anyone out there is using, or has used Breastflow bottles? We've done combined bottle/breast since birth, and used these bottles, which worked really well for us. But now I am winding down BF and we're wondering if we could use the bottles without the 2nd teat inside?

We're already on the fastflow bottles and DS seems to get bored with sucking before he's had enough and its much easier for him to suck out without the 2nd part - obviously cos that's the whole point of the design.

I have tried it a few times and it doesn't seem to cause a problem - my dp thinks I'm worrying over nothing, but the Breastflow site says you shouldn't - but to me, without, they look just like any other teat?

Any thoughts? I don't really want to go and buy all new bottles at this stage....

Katie our bf mod uses these bottles so I would PM her.

I think the site says you can't use just one because then their super-duper idea won't work rather than it being dangerous.
You can clean it safely. It's not a choking hazard. There's no reason not to.

I use the breastflow too, on the days that i'm at work so cant' bf (andrew is 13 months) so i need to be getting rid of the bottle for different reasons. ;)

Does it leak more without the 2nd teat, is that teat something to do with the airvent system that doesn't let air into the bottle.  You could end up with a windy baby.

Can i just be cheeky and ask, why are you winding down on the bf?  Is there any help we can give you over on the bf boards?

Emma - that's what I was thinking too, just not brave enough to do it without sense checking it with someone else!

Alex - it doesn't leak at all, and ds seems fine with it. If I've understood how they work correctly, I thought the inner part was there to make it harder for the baby to get the milk to flow - it hadn't occured to me it might cause more wind without it - will keep an eye on that - I took it out for the last 2 feeds today and so far he seems OK.

And be as cheeky as you like! It just feels like the right time for me - me and my dp work for ourselves so I have never truly been on maternity and just don't have time to express when I'm working or to keep my supply going. I'm still BF first and last and any random MOTN feeds, but bottle in between and I'll keep that up as long as I can - thanks for the offer of help - much appreciated.
