Can someone take a look and give me pointers?
« on: July 02, 2008, 17:40:50 pm »
Am sort of on EASY - I am REALLY trying!  It's just not always that Easy is it?! :(  I have a toddler and it's just difficult sometimes - I realise I'm not the only one though in that situation and others master it fine!

It's even difficult for me to write down what we do as the timings vary so much from day to day, particularly for naps.  He tends to just have to fall in with what I am doing with my toddler - and also I just have to do my exercise (I take him with me) to keep me fit and happy!

Some background: He's 16 weeks. He naps either in a pram in our kitchen (pretty quiet) or in the car or stroller.  He sleeps in the same pram in the evening until we take him to bed for his dreamfeed (we have 3 floors in our house and it's just easier to have him on the same floor, especially if I am trying to settle him).  At night he's sleeping in a bassinet beside our bed at the moment.  He was 4 pounds 14 ounces at birth (full-term).  Exclusively breastfeeding.  Will not take a bottle or pacifier at all.  I feel I am pretty good at reading his sleep cues most of the time.

He tends to wake pretty early - this morning was 6am (I'd like to start day at 7am ideally - he goes down at 7/7.15pm usually)
I'll show you how today as gone so far:

E 6.00 I heard him awake and starting to fuss not crying though.  (He probably woke up before then though as I am a heavy sleeper!).  Fed him as it had been 3.5 hrs since his last feed).
A 6.10 - 7.00 Played in crib and on his bassinet matress in our bed (while I tried to catch a few more ZZs before toddler surfaced!)
S 7.00-7.40 He fell asleep on the bed

A 7.40 He woke up, I dressed and changed him and he played for a bit in his bouncy chair while I got dressed.
E 8.00 I fed him again (I know it was too early but I had to take toddler to nursery and get to my exercise class - it's a class for Mums with the babies in the stroller and he would have been due for a feed bang in the middle of the class!)
A 8.05 - 9.10 Played, drove in car to drop off at nursery and get to "baby bootcamp".
S 9.10-10.00 He slept in the stroller during bootcamp.
A 10.00-10.45 Sat in stroller for a bit cooing, drove home (he was crying because hungry)

E 10.45 Fed
A 10.50-11.30? Played, cuddled, sat in chair and bumbo seat.
S 11.35 - 12.50 - Slept first part of nap at home and then in car to collect toddler (woke for about 10-15 mins when car was stationery!)

E 12.50 Had a long feed (one side only still).
A Tried to do an A time but he was very fussy - I put him in my sling and he fell asleep so I put him down to sleep.
S 1.35 - and that's where we've got to.

There are a few similarities each day in that he tends to wake early (and is wide-awake so I don't think I'd have a hope of getting him to sleep again).
He has a nap in the early morning - usually 8.15 but not today!
He tends to have a longer nap at lunchtime but not long.
He has a catnap at around 4.30/5.00 for 40-45 mins and will feed when he wakes up.
Bath/bed routines goes great and he's down by 7.00/ 7,15 usually with minimal fuss.
Usually will sleep through the evening until the dreamfeed between 10-11pm.

Last night was pretty good - we went from 11-2.30 and then from 2.30-6.00.  He was in a full-swaddle which is the first time I haven't half-swaddled him in a long long time.  However, usually he wakes twice per night (not including DF) - somewhere around 2.00 /2.30 and 4.30/5.00 or thereabouts.

Can someone give me some pointers on my routine?  I take toddler to nursery at 8,45 Mon, Wed, Fri and collect him at 12.00.  I do my baby bootcamp exercise class from 9.15-10.15 mon, Wed, Fri.  Toddler naps from about 12.45/1.00 until 3.00/3.30.  I'd like to work around that if at all possible.  Planning on moving him to his own room soon - but we have no curtains at the moment so it's too light.

Sorry to go on.......  I really need to crack this now!

Someone better qualified than me will be along soon to help you, I'm sure, but I couldn't read your post and not drop in to say I think it sounds like you're doing amazingly well! How anyone manages with a baby plus a toddler and still manages to get out for exercise class too is beyond me! You're wonder-woman in my books... xx

Well, since my day is almost finished - I thought I'd post the rest of my day - actually amazingly good!  It's only one day though - we'll see what happens tomorrow.

E 6.00 I heard him awake and starting to fuss not crying though.  (He probably woke up before then though as I am a heavy sleeper!).  Fed him as it had been 3.5 hrs since his last feed).
A 6.10 - 7.00 Played in crib and on his bassinet matress in our bed (while I tried to catch a few more ZZs before toddler surfaced!) (Activity time 1hr including feed)
S 7.00-7.40 He fell asleep on the bed (Sleep 40 mins)
A 7.40 He woke up, I dressed and changed him and he played for a bit in his bouncy chair while I got dressed.

E 8.00 I fed him again (I know it was too early but I had to take toddler to nursery and get to my exercise class - it's a class for Mums with the babies in the stroller and he would have been due for a feed bang in the middle of the class!)
A 8.05 - 9.10 Played, drove in car to drop off at nursery and get to "baby bootcamp" Activity time including feed 1.5 hrs)
S 9.10-10.00 He slept in the stroller during bootcamp (Sleep 50 mins)
A 10.00-10.45 Sat in stroller for a bit cooing, drove home (he was crying because hungry) (Activity time 1hr 35 mins)

E 10.45 Fed
A 10.50-11.30? Played, cuddled, sat in chair and bumbo seat.
S 11.35 - 12.50 - Slept first part of nap at home and then in car to collect toddler (woke for about 10-15 mins when car was stationery!)  (Sleep total approx 1 hr 15 mins)

E 12.50 Had a long feed (one side only still).
A Tried to do an A time but he was very fussy - I put him in my sling and he fell asleep so I put him down to sleep. (Activity time including feed 45 mins)
S 1.35 - 3.40 (Both DS's woke up within 5 mins of each other - what a fluke!)  (Sleep 2 hrs 5 mins)

E 3.45
A 3.50-5.40 (Activity time including feed 1 hr 55 mins)
S 5.40 - 6.20 (Sleep time 40 mins)

A 6.20-7.00 Bath etc
E 7.00 (Activity time including feed 55 mins)
S 7.15 (full swaddle - was wide awake when I put him down and as soon as I put him down he went out like a light!)  I have high hopes for this swaddle as it's been a long time since we've done a full swaddle (probably at least 10 weeks).

Looking at my day it doesn't look that bad to me (but it's only one day!) but I am not sure about the nap times.  How much daytime sleep should they get at this age and how much nighttime?  I guess we'll see how today was judging by how the night goes :)
Any pointers for me?  I am not sure about what I did when he wakes up early - is it OK if he falls asleep again when he did or should I get him up?

I added up total daytime sleep from 6am-715pm today and it's just over 6 hours.  From looking at Tracey's sleep guidelines this seems too much.   I did watch his cues so I am not sure how I'd get him to sleep less.  Should I worry about this?
